Alkanesulfonic 3-hydroxy

Sodium hydroxyalkanesulfonates may be determined in the presence of an unsaturated hydrocarbon, including sodium alkenesulfonate. The sulfonates are converted to the free sulfonic acids using a slight excess of 2,4-dinitrobenzene-sulfonic acid. The hydroxyl group of the sulfonic acid liberated is acetylated in ethyl acetate solution by a known excess of acetic anhydride. The unconsumed anhydride is hydrolyzed by a pyridine-water mixture and the acids titrated potentiometrically with standard sodium hydroxide solution. The hydroxy-alkanesulfonate content is calculated after correction for any traces of acidity or alkalinity in the original sample. 

Analysis of sulfonic acid species in sulfonated olefins. Kupfer and Kuenzler [108] reported the determination of acid species following partition between a 6.5% hydrochloric acid solution in 40% ethanol and a 1 1 (v/v) propan-2-ol-hexane mixture. The organic fraction contains alkenesulfonic and hydroxy-alkanesulfonic acids and the aqueous phase disulfonic acids and sulfato-sulfonates. The monosulfonic acids were converted to methyl esters and separated by column chromatography. To determine sulfatosulfonates the aqueous fraction was hydrolyzed and then partitioned and chromatographed. The separation is controlled using IR spectroscopy. 

Smaller organic anions Amino acids, alkane caiiwxylic acids (formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate), chloro carboxylic acids (chloroacetate, dichloroacetate), hydroxy acids (hydroxyacetate, lactate, tartrate, citrate), glycolate, gluconate, pyruvate, dicarboxylic acids (oxalate, malonate, succinate, glutarate, fumarate, maleate), alkanesulfonic acids (methanesulfonate, ethanesulfonate). 

Partition chromatography. Using silanized silica gel, the product can be separated into two fractions, one corresponding to combined disulfonates, sulfatosulfonates, and sodium sulfate, and the second containing monosulfonates. Hydroxysulfonates are not separated from other sulfonate and disulfonates. Sulfatosulfonates are detected by hydrolyzing the disulfonate fraction with 3 M HCl and testing by TLC for the presence of the hydroxy-alkanesulfonate hydrolysis products.
