Alkane composition

An on-line LC-GC method was used to assess the -alkane composition of forty (40) olive oil samples obtained from three different cultivars from a restricted grove zone in Croatia. Olive samples were handpicked at three different ripening stages during four consecutive years and trivial differences were found according to the period of harvesting . LDA verified the efficiency of the n-alkane composition as a means of variety differentiation, despite the influence of the production... [Pg.168]

The lipids of prokaryotes have been reviewedUnlike higher plants, bacteria (with the exception of mycobacteria) do not usually contain significant amounts of waxes in their surface layers. Lipid droplets are infrequently seen internally—in Acinetobacter species these may contain up to 12% alkanes mainly as the n-Cj compound . The main interest surrounding the alkane composition has been its use in differentiating species of micrococci (in which hydrocarbons may contain up to 20% of total lipid) from staphylococci, which lack hydrocarbons. Two Sarcina species were found to contain the same hydrocarbon pattern and have been reclassified on the basis of this and other criteria as a single Micrococcus species . [Pg.907]

For a multicomponent system, it is possible to simulate at constant pressure rather than constant volume, as separation into phases of different compositions is still allowed. The method allows one to study straightforwardly phase equilibria in confined systems such as pores [166]. Configuration-biased MC methods can be used in combination with the Gibbs ensemble. An impressive demonstration of this has been the detennination by Siepmaim et al [167] and Smit et al [168] of liquid-vapour coexistence curves for n-alkane chain molecules as long as 48 atoms. [Pg.2269]

Cool Flames. An intriguing phenomenon known as "cool" flames or oscillations appears to be intimately associated with NTC relationships. A cool flame occurs in static systems at certain compositions of hydrocarbon and oxygen mixtures over certain ranges of temperature and pressure. After an induction period of a few minutes, a pale blue flame may propagate slowly outward from the center of the reaction vessel. Depending on conditions, several such flames may be seen in succession. As many as five have been reported for propane (75) and for methyl ethyl ketone (76) six have been reported for butane (77). As many as 10 cool flames have been reported for some alkanes (60). The relationships of cool flames to other VPO domains are depicted in Figure 6. [Pg.339]

Methane, ethane, and propane are the first three members of the alkane hydrocarbon series having the composition, Selected properties of these... [Pg.398]

Wax usually refers to a substance that is a plastic solid at ambient temperature and that, on being subjected to moderately elevated temperatures, becomes a low viscosity hquid. Because it is plastic, wax usually deforms under pressure without the appHcation of heat. The chemical composition of waxes is complex all of the products have relatively wide molecular weight profiles, with the functionaUty ranging from products that contain mainly normal alkanes to those that are mixtures of hydrocarbons and reactive functional species. [Pg.314]

Nepeta (Lamiaceae) is a genus of perennial or annual herbs found in Asia, Europe and North Africa. About 250 species of Nepeta are reported of which, 67 species are present in Iran. Some species of this genus are important medicinal plants and their extracts have been used for medicinal purposes. Aerial parts of Nepeta sintenisii Bornm. was subjected to hydrodistillation and the chemical composition of isolated essential oil has been analyzed by GC/MS method for first time. Identification of components of the volatile oil was based on retention indices relative to n-alkanes and computer matching with the Wiley275.L library, as well as by comparison of the fragmentation patterns of the mass spectra with those reported in the literature. [Pg.232]

The detailed study of chemical composition, stmcture, surface, shape and sizes of particles of fine-dispersed zeolite powder by EPMA will provide useful recommendations to improve the technology of producing alkanes and alkyl benzenes catalysts. [Pg.438]

An aqueous ethanol solution of acrylamide, 2,2 -methylenebisacrylamide as cross-linked agent and third acrylamide derivative, is dispersed in an n-alkane. Then three monomers are polymerized to spherical porous gels. The effect of the composition of the third monomer on the exclusion limits of the gel in size-exclusion chromatography has been investigated (82). [Pg.22]
