Alkaloids in biology

For many years, the nature of alkaloids in biology was a mystery. It has been difficult to understand the function of these compounds in plant metabolism. There are many explanations for why plants, animals and micro-organisms produce alkaloids. [Pg.141]

Alkaloids are non-toxic in vacuoles where they are stored but toxic when they escape from the vacuoles. They have to change their chemical configurations and biological activity in different cells and tissues according to pH changes. This means that some alkaloids can have different biological activity in different cell [Pg.142]

Analysis of tropane alkaloids in biological fluids has been developed mostly for cocaine and metabolites. Indeed, it is well recognized that cocaine remains one of the most widely consumed drugs of abuse worldwide. Generally, reversed phase liquid chromatography coupled with UV-VIS detection is employed for these analyses. [Pg.356]

An advantage of reversed-phase chromatography in the analysis of alkaloids in biological fluids is that an analysis can be carried out directly without any laborious sample clean-up procedure. However, the use of a precolumn to avoid a too rapid deterioration of the HPLC column is advisable (see Chapter 11). When using aqueous salt solutions in reversed-phase chromatography, one has to be aware of the risk of corrosion of stainless steel columns (see Table 1.3)38. [Pg.226]
