Figure 2 shows adsorption isotherms of two sulfated ethoxy-late type anionics - Alipal EP-110 and Alipal EP-120 - on the 85/15 VA/BA latex surface. Again it is soen that the lower molecular weight EP-110 shows a C type isotherm similar to NaLS while the higher molecular weight EP-120 exhibits a normal saturation type isotherm. 

Lower molecular weight (300-800) anionic surfactants such as NaLS and Alipal EP-110 adsorb at a vinyl acrylic latex in a complex C-type adsorption isotherm, leading to penetration and solubilization of latex. 

Relatively higher molecular weight (1600) anionic surfactants such as Alipal EP-120 and Aerosol A-102 adsorb in a normal manner, suggesting that there exists a critical size, specific charge density and perhaps shape for the surfactant to be able to penetrate into the latex. 

Attempts to correlate the adsorption data of other surfactants such as Alipal EP-110 and NaLS on the three latex surfaces in a similar manner failed because of the more complex and specific interactions observed in these systems. Equation 2 can adequately describe the adsorption data of surfactants at polymer/ water interfaces, provided that the free energy of the interface is related to the free energy of adsorption and there are no specific interactions between surfactant and interface (15).

Reservoir Sandstone (RS) Micromodel. The RS micromodel was used in a variety of experiments examining the effects of surfactant, foam quality, injection scheme and pressure level on foam displacement efficiency and flow patterns. Various gases and brines or surfactant solutions were used, primarily field injection gas and brine, and the surfactant AES (trade name Alipal CD-128) at a concentration of 0.5 wt.%. 

Laboratory tests with Alipal CD-128 indicated that a steady-state reciprocal apparent viscosity of 0.2-0.4 cP (about equal to that of the oil) could be obtained and that surfactant retention by the reservoir rock would not be excessive (0.00056 lb surfac-tant/ft of rock permanent adsorption). Eventually, the following injection sequence was planned (1) 15 kg of NH4SCN tracer in 371 bbl of water, followed by a water spacer between the tracer and the subsequent surfactant solution (2) 2,764 bbl of 0.1% surfactant, intended to satisfy the adsorption requirements of the rock ... 

Long Beach CO2 Diversion Test(4). The injection of an 85 15 mixture of CO2 and N2 into the Tar Zone of Fault Block V of the Wilmington, California, field began in February 1982, after the field had been water flooded for 20 years. The field pressure (1,100 psi) was well below the miscibility pressure (> 3,000 psi) of the heavy (14 API gravity) oil. In this 320 acre WAG project gas was injected in 2 wells and water in 8, with the gas injection rotated among the 10 injection wells. One of these 10 wells was selected as the injector for a test of the surfactant Alipal CD-128 as a diverting agent.
