Obtained by reduction of phorone, b.p. 169 C. Very good solvent for aldehyde resins. 

Now warm 2-3 drops of acetaldehyde with 3-4 ml. of 10-20 per cent, sodium hydroxide solution, i.e., with excess of concentrated alkali solution. Observe the formation of a yellow aldehyde resin and the attendant peculiar odour. 

Phenolic resins were the first totally synthetic plastics invented. They were commercialized by 1910 [I]. Their history begins before the development of the structural theory of chemistry and even before Kekule had his famous dreams of snakes biting their tails. It commences with Gerhardt s 1853 observations of insoluble resin formation while dehydrating sodium salicylate [2]. These were followed by similar reports on the behavior of salicylic acid derivatives under a variety of reaction conditions by Schroder et al. (1869), Baeyer (1872), Velden (1877), Doebner (1896 and 1898), Speyer (1897) and Baekeland (1909-1912) [3-17]. Experiment 11.—A few drops of acetaldehyde, dissolved in about 2 c.c. of water, are heated in a test tube with 0-5 c.c. of dilute sodium hydroxide solution. A yellow colour develops and the acetaldehyde is converted by way of aldol into crotonaldehyde, which can be recognised in the boiling solution by its pungent odour. If acetaldehyde is heated with concentrated alkali solution yellow aldehyde resin is precipitated as a result of further condensation.
