Cognitive decline alcoholism

Alzheimer s disease is the term given to dementia that cannot be attributed to an obvious cause, for example brain trauma, a stroke or alcohol abuse. Alzheimer s disease is a gradual and irreversible decline in intellectual ability that usually appears after the age of 60. The disease has been estimated to affect 5% of over 65 year olds. Patients experience a progressive loss of cognitive function, usually beginning with loss of short-term memory followed by loss of other functions such as ability to calculate and ability to use everyday objects. [Pg.221]

Most research points to the so-called Mediterranean diet—one that is high in healthy fats, legumes, nuts, cereal, fish, fruits, and vegetables— as being the best for the brain. This dietary pattern, which is also lower in saturated fat and meat and contains moderate amounts of alcohol and dairy products, has several benefits when it comes to memory, cognitive function, and mood. [Pg.447]
