Alarms and indication

Panel alarms and indications should not be mounted lower than approximately 0.76 meters (2 6" ft,) or higher than 1.83 meters (6 0 ft ). Outside these limits the alarm s alarm indicators are less noticeable and awkward for maintenance personnel activities.

It is recommended that several different control samples be used simultaneously in the quality control, e.g., control materials at low and high concentration levels. In this case, it is recommended that the six control rules commonly known as Westgard rules be used [34]. These control procedures provide simple data analysis with low probability for false rejection or false alarms and indications of the type of analytical error occurring when a run is rejected. 

Cuts have had to be made in operating personnel and in the cost of sampling and laboratory analysis. As a result, there has been wider use of a variety of sensors and analyzers. Despite enhanced reliability, they are better suited to monitoring by alarms and indications of trends than to regulating. Regulating still remains the domain of pH-meters (neutralization) or redox-meters (oxidation). 

In three cases, manual actions are invoked as part of a safety measure. The relevant faults are boron dilution during operation at power with rods under automatic control (feult 4.6.5), small coolant line break outside contaimnent (fault 4.8.4) and loss of residual heat removal system function during refuelling (fault 4.10). In the first case, the operators would be made aware of the need for action by a number of alarms and indications, and would have 5 hours to respond. In the second case, the potential release of primary coolant would be very small, with attendant very low... 

Demonstrate that essential plant components and systems, including alarms and indications, meet appropriate criteria based on the design.

Whenever practicable, control and protection functions shall be mutually independent. If this is not feasible, detailed justification for shared and interrelated systems shall be provided. Ergonomic factors shall be considered when designing provisions for alarms and indications to the operator.
