In this section, we will explore the safety properties of a specific set of complex hydrides, sodium alanates. These materials represent the most advanced solid-state hydrogen system developed to date and allow us to understand the safety properties associated with this class of materials. 

The main safety concern associated with the alanates is their high reactivity with water. The heat of the hydrolysis reactions can drive the thermal... 

In general all A1—H and A1—C bonds in organoaluminum compounds react quantitatively at or below room temperature with water and alcohols to form compounds with A1—O bonds. Thus trialkyl alanes with alcohols produce aluminum alcoholates and alkanes. Reaction between water or most of the lower alcohols (methanol, ethanol) and trialkyl alanes with small alkyl groups is usually explosive if the undiluted components are mixed at room temperature. If certain safety precautions are observed, however, it is possible to carry out the hydrolysis (or deuterolysis for analytical purposes) so as to obtain the corresponding hydrocarbons. Ether solutions are particularly advantageous as the etherates of trialkyl alanes react less vigorously than the free compounds. 

The pyrophoric character and sensitivity to water of doped alanates represents a concern for any practical application. Up to now, no systematic investigation of the safety aspects of alanates has been carried out. The above-mentioned formation of a porous mass upon cyclization may to some extent help to moderate the safety problem.

Since the publication of the Institute of Medicine report, many governments and professional organizations have released reports and official statements on patient safety. The British equivalent of the Institute of Medicine report was prepared by a group led by Professor Liam Donaldson, the UK Chief Medical Officer (Department of Health, 2000). Unlike the Institute of Medidne report, it emanated from government and was bravely authorized for release by the then Secretary of State for Health, Alan Milbum.

I asked Alan Hoskin, manager of the statistics department at the National Safety Council, whether the trending for lost workday cases with 31 or more days-away-from-work is statistically significant. He said it is. But, the lost workday case reporting rules on how days away from work are counted were revised by OSHA for 2002. Obviously, the trend data shown above need a closer look. Using the base data from the BLS reports for 1995-2001 and assuming the rules had not changed, Hoskin statistically projected numbers for 2002 and 2003.
