Air pollution in China

In this chapter, characteristics of indoor air pollutants in China are introduced first. Then the main reasons for the indoor air quality problem are analyzed. Finally, current existing strategies and measures for reduction of indoor air pollution are described. [Pg.242]

Second, it is clear that house buying and indoor decoration and refurbishment of existing and new buildings will still be in great demand in view of the economic development trend and the current hving space situation in China, especially in urban areas. Managing the construction and indoor decoration and refurbishment of the residential buildings will continue to be one of the most critical factors in the control of indoor air pollution in China. [Pg.262]

The assessment of air pollution in the Central Asian region is of great significance for environmental risk estimates. Case study countries, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are located in Central Asia and have long boundaries with China, the Asian part of Russia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In recent years, there have been many complaints relevant to indoor air pollution caused by formaldehyde and VOCs emissions from decorating and refurbishing materials in China. Beijing City s Changping District People s Court judged China s first damages lawsuit for indoor air pollution in June 2001. Formaldehyde, in a concentration surpassing the indicated standard by 19.5 times, with value of 1.56 mg/m in the owner s bedroom, resulted in the lawsuit [22]. [Pg.249]

According to the findings of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, air pollution is now one of the top ten causes of fatal illness worldwide. Pollution from cars has become an especially serious issue in many Asian cities due to a rapid increase in ownership and use. It is estimated that 2.1 million people, mostly in China and India, died prematurely in Asia from air pollution in 2010, with a major cause being fine particles and gases emitted by cars and lorries [35, 36]. The full effects of such pollution on health and fatality in these cities may not be known for many years due to the long latency of many associated diseases, including cancers. [Pg.68]

In a relatively small continental area such as Europe, there is not much difference between what would be considered the regional scale and the continental scale. However, on most other continents there would be a difference between what is considered regional and what continental. Perhaps of greatest concern on the continental scale is that the air pollution policies of a nation are likely to create impacts on neighboring nations. Acid rain in Scandanavia has been considered to have had impacts from Great Britain and Western Europe. Japan has considered that part of their air pollution problem, especially in the western part of the country, has origins in China and Korea. Cooperation in the examination of the North American acid rain problem has existed for a long time between Canada and the United States. [Pg.38]
