Robert E. Silberglied died on January 13, 1982 in the crash of Air Florida flight 90 in Washington, DC at the age of 36—ironically on the day he proposed marriage (a proposal joyfully accepted). I last saw him when he was 16, yet he remains for me a vital force—the combination of quirkiness and creativity so typical of a natural-born scientist. ... 

The Smithsonian Institution Archives retain Robert s papers (1960-1982) and related materials (to 1984) in a collection (Record Unit 7316) described by Rebecca V. Schoemaker (see http llwww.si.edularchivesljaru73l6.htm). An article on the aftermath of Air Florida Flight 90 appeared (The New York Times Magazine, August 4, 2002, pp. 36-41). I am grateful for the details about Robert s life that it provides.

In 1982, an Air Florida Boeing 737 aircraft crashed in Washington, D.C., because the pilot failed to heed to the copilot s repeated warnings that the aircraft was moving too slowly during the acceleration prior to takeoff [11].

The water-to-air heat pumps are available in the market from various manufacturers ranging in capacity from 1/2 tons and upward. Manufacturers include ClimateMaster, McQuay, Trane, Carrier, Waterfiirnace and Florida Heat pump. 

The major drawback to using the Florida study to support the correlation between indoor and soil measurements was that the indoor measurements were obtained from 3-day closed-house charcoal measurements, and soil radon was obtained from 1-month alpha track measurements buried 1 ft beneath the soil surface. Comparisons of charcoal and alpha track data are generally not recommended since they are quite different measurement techniques, and represent radon levels over different time periods. However, the study was subjected to numerous quality control checks including deployment of alpha track detectors in 10% of the houses to obtain a check on indoor air measurements made by charcoal canisters. In spite of the measurement drawbacks, the study indicates that soil radon measurements taken alone are not a dependable predictor of potential indoor radon concentration.
