The economic scale of the application of radiation in the field of agriculture in Japan was estimated from public documents to be about 964 million in 1997. The economic scale survey in food irradiation and mutation breeding was extended to the United States for a direct comparison to the situation in Japan. The maximum estimation amounted to 3.2 billion for food irradiation and 11.2 billion for mutation breeding. The economic scale for products in selected agricultural fields was 14.5 billion for the United States and about 0.8 billion for Japan, implying that the former is larger in magnitude by a factor of about 18 [5]. 

Calcium peroxide has several horticultural and agricultural applications, particularly in Japan. Usually used in the form of granules, it acts by providing extra oxygen for germinating plants and other organisms.

To commercialize agricultural end-use products in Japan, applicants are required to submit appropriate data to MAFF. The data required for registration are summarized in this section. 

Agricultural films are a well-established application in Japan and the EU. 

Agricultural mulching film is one of the typical applications for biodegradable plastics. Currently, Bionolle mulching film is commonly used in Japan, and is an important market for us. However, some farmers are anxious about the effects of repeated use of biodegradable plastic on the farm. We, as a manufacturer of Bionolle, need to accumulate knowledge on such usage in the farm. 

Some preliminary tests of brassinosteroids by the USDA Beltsville group suggested that brassinosteroids can be used for increasing food production (73). This early work led to extensive studies on effects of brassinosteroids on plant growth and application in agriculture which were carried out in Japan, due to the availability of brassinosteroids (14). A significant amount of epibrassinolide was provided vide supra for the field tests. The samples of brassinolide and 225,235-homobrassinolide were also supplied for field tests. The basic biological studies on brassinosteroids were started in Japan in 1980 and field tests for practical use have been undertaken since 1983. The results of these studies have been reviewed in Japanese articles (75). 

Finally, application of a particular biofunctional molecule in agriculture and other bioindustries or health care and medicine is the practical goal of the research. Chemists will synthesize many analogs and derivatives, and biologists will evaluate their biological effects. If one can find a useful compound, it will be commercialized for practical application. For example, gibberellin A3 (1) is used in Japan to produce seedless grapes.
