Aging skin prevention

Ceramide is now included in some skin creams which are claimed to be beneficial to the skin, preventing drying and reducing the effects of ageing. Linoleoyl-ceramide is present in the skin where it restricts water permeability, preventing excessive water loss from the skin. [Pg.243]

The wisest patients go to see their doctor before the clinical signs of aging appear and seek advice on how to prevent skin aging. The preventive treatments that might be suggested to these patients are straightforward and superficial procedures that do not disrupt their social lives too much. They may simply be prescribed cosmeceuticals DHEA-Phyto , Actihft (dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) cream), Renutriv ACE Lipoic Complex (an antioxidant) or Vit E... [Pg.97]

Fatty acids are the integral part of skin and help to maintain a healthy and youthful skin. Topical application of fatty acids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) has been proved to have potential impact on skin and hair. Primary role of fatty acids in cosmetic composition is its moisturizing function. Fatty acids function as emollients, which on application to skin form a hydrophobic layer and prevent the water loss from skin, eventually reduce the skin dryness and make the skin smooth and soft. Apart from that, PUFA are powerftil antioxidants and can be used to alleviate oxidative damage associated with sun exposure. They were reported to inhibit collagen breakdown and eliminate aging skin symptoms like wrinkles. [Pg.640]

The effectiveness of the stratum corneum in blocking the passage of chemicals varies from one part of the human body to another. It is particularly difficult for chemicals to cross the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, but they get by the scrotum fairly easily. Abdominal skin is of intermediate effectiveness in preventing absorption. Age and sex also influence rates of dermal absorption, and some species... [Pg.42]

Skin depigmentation effect. Extract of the dried seed, administered externally to adults at a dose of 5%, was active. Skin-lightening cosmetics contained extract of Coffea arabica seeds (containing chlorogenic acid) as melanin-formation inhibitors. The extract has been incorporated into cosmetics for skin-aging prevention or into hair preparations for hair protection. Biological activity reported has been patented . [Pg.181]

T FIGURE 10-20 Vitamin D3 production and metabolism, (a) Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is produced in the skin by UV irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol, which breaks the bond shaded pink. In the liver, a hydroxyl group is added at C-25 (pink) in the kidney, a second hydroxylation at C-1 (pink) produces the active hormone, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. This hormone regulates the metabolism of Ca2+ in kidney, intestine, and bone, (b) Dietary vitamin D prevents rickets, a disease once common in cold climates where heavy clothing blocks the UV component of sunlight necessary for the production of vitamin D3 in skin. On the left is a 21/2-year-old boy with severe rickets on the right, the same boy at age 5, after 14 months of vitamin D therapy. [Pg.360]

The UV iradiation has been shown to be involved in membrane lipid peroxidation and this induces matrix metalloproteinase-l-expression.38 Therefore, the use of antioxidants has been suggested in treating and preventing skin aging.39 Whether this also works in preventing dry skin in aging is unknown. [Pg.122]
