Against the Current

The resolution of the ToF analyser is dependent upon the ability to measure the very small differences in time required for ions of a similar m/z to reach the detector. Increasing the distance that the ions travel between source and detector, i.e. increasing the length of the flight tube, would accentuate any such small time-differences. The implication of such an increase is that the instrument would be physically larger and this goes against the current trend towards the miniaturization of all analytical equipment.

When all the documentation is collected, a list is made. This can be compared against the current regulations, industry guidelines, and the corporate validation policy. This generates a list of missing documents and defines the gap to be filled. 

Both of the above types should involve checking the document in the EDMS against the current approved document. This should incorporate a check on the accuracy of the attributes entered on imporhng the document. 

The values of the atomic electron affinities determined before 1967 are plotted against the current EvV in Figure 5.13. This is a precision and accuracy (or P and A) plot. To take a simple illustration, a man can swim at the rate of two miles an hour, and a river is flowing at the rate of one mile an hour. If the man swims down-stream, the river will carry him one mile in one hour, and his swimming will carry him two miles in the same time. Hence the man s actual rate of progress downstream will be three miles an hour. If the man had started to swim up-stream against the current, his actual rate of progress would be the difference between the velocity of the stream and his rate of swimming. In short, the man would travel at the rate of one mile an hour against the current. 

Fig. 4 describes the best basis algorithm, or more specifically how to find the wavelet packet coefficients from the best basis algorithm. Step 1 performs the WPT to some prespecified level jo as described previously. Step 2 then initializes a current best basis or best set of bands. Initially, the best set of bands (BB) is simply all the bands at level Jq in the WPT. Steps 3-9 begin to compare the cost measure of the parent nodes against the current best of bands which are descendants of the parent nodes being examined. Here, the aim is to minimize the cost measure.
