Coconut has high productivity and production consistency compared with other oilseed crops and is also less susceptible to abnormal climatic conditions. World production of coconut has been estimated at 61.7 million tons (MT) with an average yield of 5.2ton/ha. The top three producers are Indonesia, the Philippines and India, which account for 75% of global production. Of the 77 African, Caribbean and Pacific member conntries, 47 produced 4.59 MT of coconuts on 1.7 million hectares, representing 7.4% of world production. [Pg.234]

The highest incidence of SCD is seen in those with African heritage, but SCD also affects persons of Indian, Saudi Arabian, Mediterranean, South and Central American, and Caribbean ancestry.6,7 There are more than 200,000 babies born each year in Africa with SCA.7 The prevalence of SCT in Africa varies across regions, with ranges of 10% to 40% across equatorial Africa, 1% to 2% on the North African coast, and less than 1% in South Africa.7... [Pg.1004]

Females of most Drosophila populations have high amounts of 7,11-FID, while those of African and Caribbean populations have high amounts of 5,9-HD (Jallon and P6chin6, 1989). This difference in hydrocarbons has been mapped to a single locus, 87C-D, which is close to the location of desatl gene (Coyne et al., 1999). This is due to the second desaturase gene, desatl, being located close to desatl. [Pg.272]

Geographical polymorphism has also been observed in females (Jallon and Pechine, 1989 Ferveur et al., 1996). African and Caribbean females have high 5,9-heptacosadi-ene (5,9-HD 27C), whereas cosmopolitan females have high 7,11-heptacosadiene levels (7,11-HD 27C) (Figure 7.2). Chapter 4 presents a detailed description of this polymorphism, and later in this chapter we discuss its implications in phylogeny and speciation. [Pg.123]

This information could be useful to companies in most regions of the world North American companies, South American companies, Asian Pacific Companies, Middle East companies, European companies, Central American and Caribbean companies, and South African companies. However, developing or third-world countries will probably benefit the most from the comprehensive information in this book. [Pg.439]

The plant material can be used as herbal material, once dried, e.g. marijuana. Low-quality products, which contain stalks, seeds, leaves and flowering tops, may be compressed into blocks (West African and Caribbean material), it may occur as loose herbal material (from Central and Southern Africa), or it may be rolled into a so-called Com Bob , wrapped in vegetable fibre (again from Central and Southern Africa). Higher-quahty materials, composed of fruiting tops and flowers alone, may also be encountered. If tied around bamboo sticks, this material is known as Buddha Sticks or Thai Sticks , and arises from South-East Asia. A central bamboo cane is used, around which up to 2 g of herbal material can be tied. The materials can be seized in bundles of up to 20 sticks. An African equivalent is to wrap the material in a small roll of brown paper such rolls frequently contain less than 0.5 g of cannabis per roll. Sieved products may also be encountered. This process removes the stems and the leaves, producing Kif, a material derived from North Africa, for example, from Morocco. [Pg.51]

If you use metallic mercury or azogue in religious practices, you may expose your children or unborn child to mercury or contaminate your home. Such practices in which mercury containing substances have traditionally been used include Santeria (a Cuban-based religion whose followers worship both African deities and Catholic saints), Voodoo (a Haitian-based set of beliefs and rituals), Palo Mayombe (a secret form of ancestor worship practiced mainly in the Caribbean), or Espiritismo (a spiritual belief system native to Puerto Rico). [Pg.40]
