Altogether, tectonically emplaced and abyssal mantle rocks provide insights into upper mantle compositions and processes that are complementary to the information conveyed by mantle xenoliths (See Chapter 2.05). They provide coverage to vast regions of the Earth s upper mantle that are sparsely sampled by mantle xenoliths, particularly in the ocean basins and beneath passive continental margins, back-arc basins, and oceanic island arcs. 

This group includes peridotite massifs dominated by fertile Iherzolites that were exhumed in the early stages of continental rifting and exposed as denuded mantle on the seafloor, along passive continental margins.

Fleming et al. (1999) and Cockbum et al. (2000) used erosion rate determinations with cosmogenic radionuclides to assess the rates of escarpment retreat at the passive continental margins of eastern South Africa and Namibia, respectively. In both cases the retreat rates were shown to be much too low to be compatible with an escarpment origin at the continental margin during the time of continent break-up.
