Aesthetics pigmentation

Gel coats are pigmented polyester coatings appHed to the mold surface and are an integral part of the finished laminate. Gel coats are used widely on hand lay-up and spray-up parts to enhance surface aesthetics and coloration as weU as to provide an abrasion-resistant waterproof surface that protects the underlying glass-reinforced stmcture. 

Carotenoids are also used as pigments and dietary supplements in animals and poultry feedstuffs. They are added to pharmaceutical products to provide a form of control during manufacturing and to distinguish one product from another. They also enhance the aesthetic aspects of the products (210). 

The use of disperse—reactive dye combinations is popular for printing polyester—viscose blends for fashion fabrics where the drape, handle, and general aesthetic quaUties of such fabrics are adversely affected by pigment printing. 

Each of these additives plays an important role in either the processing or service life of the finished goods. In addition, fillers and pigments are two larger scale additives that play an important role in product economics and aesthetics. 

In centuries prior to the industrial revolution, before the development of manufactured paints, a painter was not only an artist, but also a formulator of paints , thus experimenting with a multitude of materials as paint. Organic paint binders typically were adhesive to the ground layer and also provided a matrix capable of suspending the coloured pigments. Specific binders were needed to form stable films with aesthetic visual properties. In European artwork,... 

In studying works of art and of artifacts the latter proviso is usually satisfied because iron compounds occur as pigments at the aesthetic surface of a painting (often covered by only a thin layer of varnish) or are homogeneously distributed throughout the matrix of statuary or archaeological material. 

Difficulties were encountered in the in-painting process for the fills cast on the suction table. Since these fills were accomplished without adhesive, they were even more sensitive to dimensional change by application of moisture than flat paper or hand-cast mends. Some experimentation was done in pre-coloring the pulp with dry pigments. Although this coloring process was extremely effective, it produced a flat, even color which was not aesthetically pleasing. 

Extensive use is made in embedding in the plastic various ornamental or utilitarian objects. The process provides means to easily incorporate different product requirements such as coloring and texturing. The plastic mixture may contain pigments, fillers, plasticizer, and other chemical additives. They can include reinforcements providing aesthetic to increasing strength (Chapter 15). 

The macroscopic appearance of these colonies has been compared to green oily paint on the surface of the water and is thus aesthetically undesirable. This offensive cyanobacterial mat also causes turbidity in recreational and amenity waters. As the cyanobacterial colonies begin to deteriorate a blue pigment forms, and this gives rise to the name cyanobacteria [47,48]. 

Anthocyanin compounds have been reported to exhibit antioxidative (Pool-Zobel et al, 1999 Tsuda et al, 1996), antimutagenic (Yoshimoto et al, 1999, 2001), antidiabetic (Jayaprakasam et al, 2005 Matsui et al, 2002), and anticarcinogenic (Hou et al, 2004 Kamei et al, 1995) activities. Although anthocyanins in red-fleshed kiwifruit offer potential health benefits, those benefits should not be overestimated because anthocyanin concentrations in kiwifruit are only 10% or less than those in whole blueberry fruits (Montefiori et al, 2005). Instead, the principal benefit of these pigments in red-fleshed kiwifruit is aesthetic, to foster commercial appeal. Attractiveness of Hongyang fruit was actually evidenced by an experimental market method (Jaeger and Marker, 2005), which showed that consumers were willing to pay a considerable price premium for the fruit. 

The use of pigments in polymer eompounds has beeome widespread in the plasties industry for aesthetic as well as for functional purposes. Polypropylene (PP), being semicrystalline polymer, is highly sensitive to incorporation of additives.
