Advanced degrees

Coarse-sized particles dominate the particle size distribution of arid soils. Some soils are also quite gravelly. The subsurface horizons commonly exhibit accumulation zones of carbonates, gypsum and more soluble salts. Many arid zone soils are shallow and gravelly, some are alkaline. Their structure is weak. Finally, the ultimate test of the success of any textbook is whether or not it stays on your bookshelf. It is hoped that the extent of physical and mechanical property data, along with the depth with which the subjects are presented, will serve the student well as they transition to the world of the practicing engineer or continue with their studies in pursuit of an advanced degree. 

There is sometimes a need for very low temperatures, e.g to examine electrode kinetics at superconductors in frozen electrolytes, say, at <100 K. Here it may be necessary to use a more advanced degree of cooling, e.g., work within a cryostat using liquid H2, by which experiments to a few degrees above absolute zero can be made (Bockris and Wass, 1989). 

In many cases method development chemists hold advanced degrees and possess years of laboratory experience. Their cGMP training is often limited, however, and thus inadequate for performing validation. The training program, therefore, must emphasize regulatory compliance, especially in notebook documentation skills.

Note that for some arts, such as the chemical arts, the USPTO recommends that its examiners, who likely hold advanced degrees, still use the services of USPTO personnel specifically trained in specialized tools for searching the chemical arts.

At BioMedica, Dr. Kirumira oversees 12 employees, six of whom have advanced degrees, three technicians and three administrators. In addition, Dr. Kirumira teaches biochemistry and biotechnology at Acadia and Dalhousie Universities. 

One measure of success is retention and degree attainment. As manager of doctoral recruiting at P G, I have the responsibility to attract advanced-degreed candidates to apply for R D positions with our company. The results in Figure 9.6 show that, with the exception of fiscal 1996-1997, at least 10 percent of the doctoral candidates hired by P G were either black or Hispanic, with an average annual underrepresented minority hiring rate of 15 percent over the six years measured. To put these numbers into perspective, we need to consider both the academic supply of advanced-degreed minorities as well as the average hiring rate of our industrial competitors. 

I am so impressed by this opportunity for the fellows to receive University and Museum training for an advanced degree, that I really believe this phase of the Museum program is quite as important as the Museum itself. Years after all the books on the Museum have been written, I feel that the training and education of these young people at Winterthur will make the Museum a living force through the age. 

We further realize that the slowest rate shown in many of the curves here may be an artifact resulting from the use of simplified Equation 4 if Equation 3 is applied, a noticeable break between the end of the second stage and the beginning of the final stage (crystallite attack) may be put off to a much more advanced degree of degradation if a discontinuity in the experimental data appears at all.
