Adjunction

Since its inception, the institute, in addition to its regular faculty members, has always had a number of outstanding scientists associated with it as fellows or adjunct facnlty. These include, among others, Ned Arnett, Joe Casanova, Paul Schleyer, Jean Sommer, Gabor Somorjai, Peter Stang, Michael Szwarc (who just recently passed away), Ken Wade, and Bob Williams. They greatly contribnte to onr scientific work by their visits and participation in our symposia and freqnently throngh close research cooperation. Because they are also close friends. [Pg.124]

Microbial leaching of metals from ores is a promising adjunct to more aggressive metal recovery technologies (77), but is generally achieved by oxidative processes that generate very acidic waters. It seems unlikely that similar approaches will be of much value in removing contaminant metals and metalloids from soils. [Pg.36]

HINT adjunct to CoMEA, computes hydrophobic fields EduSoft, Inc. (KeHog/Abraham)... [Pg.169]

After cleaning to remove coarse material, ie, cobs, and fines (broken com, dust, etc), the com is steeped in a sulfurous acid solution to soften the com and render the starch granules separable from the protein matrix that envelopes them. About 7% of the kernel s dry substance is leached out during this step, forming protein-rich steep-water, a valuable feed ingredient and fermentation adjunct. [Pg.359]

Secondary and Micronutrients in Fertilizers The great majority of farm fertilizers are produced, marketed, and appHed with regard only to the primary plant nutrient content. The natural supply of secondary and micronutrients in the majority of soils is usually sufficient for optimum growth of most principal crops. There are, however, many identified geographical areas and crop—soil combinations for which soil appHcation of secondary and/or micronutrient sources is beneficial or even essential. The fertilizer industry accepts the responsibiHty for providing these secondary and micronutrients, most often as an additive or adjunct to primary nutrient fertilizers. However, the source chemicals used to provide the secondary and micronutrient elements are usually procured from outside the fertilizer industry, for example from mineral processors. The responsibiHties of the fertilizer producer include procurement of an acceptable source material and incorporation in a manner that does not decrease the chemical or physical acceptabiHty of the fertilizer product and provides uniform appHcation of the added elements on the field. [Pg.241]

Flavors. Those mixtures of ingredients whose exact composition is usually known only to their suppHers, sold in bulk to food and beverage manufacturers. They are to be labeled as flavors per CFR 21 part 101 and may contain adjuncts that are nonflavor ingredients. [Pg.19]

Meg estrolAceta.te. This compound is used outside the United States as an oral contraceptive. In the United States, it is used for the paUiative treatment of breast cancer and endometrial cancer, or as an adjunct to other therapies. Its use has been associated with an increased appetite and food intake and has been evaluated in the treatment of anorexia and cachexia (107). [Pg.217]

Liquid Dosage Forms. Simple aqueous solutions, symps, elixirs, and tinctures are prepared by dissolution of solutes in the appropriate solvent systems. Adjunct formulation ingredients include certified dyes, flavors, sweeteners, and antimicrobial preservatives. These solutions are filtered under pressure, often using selected filtering aid materials. The products are stored in large tanks, ready for filling into containers. QuaUty control analysis is then performed. [Pg.233]

Technetium-99m exametazime [(RR,3 3)-4,8-diaza-3,6,6,9-tetramethylundecane-2,10-dionebisoxime] is used as an adjunct in the detection of altered regional cerebral perfusion in stroke. The kit for the preparation of the radiopharmaceutical is suppHed as a single dose vial. [Pg.484]

Technetium-99m tetrafosmin ( Tc-(V)02 (l,2-bis(bis(2-ethoxyethyl)phosphino)ethane) (see Fig. 3d)) is a myocardial perfusion agent. It is used as an adjunct in the diagnosis and localization of myocardial ischemia and/or infarction. [Pg.484]

In the canning and preserving industries, com symps are used to prevent crystallization of sucrose, provide body, accentuate tme fmit flavors, and improve color and texture. In the beverage industry, the predominant use is in the beer and malt-Hquor areas. High conversion symps are used to replace dry cereal adjuncts, provide fermentable sugars, enhance flavor, and provide body. These symps contain controlled amounts of dextrose and maltose for proper fermentation. [Pg.295]

Appetite suppressants have been widely used as an adjunct to dietary restriction and sympathomimetic amines have traditionally been used for this purpose. These agents have not proven particularly useful and frequentiy cause unacceptable side effects, hence their popularity has been waning for several years. The most promising newer dmgs work through a serotoninergic mechanism and hold considerable promise at least for certain obese patients. [Pg.215]

Frequendy, the treatment of helminthic diseases requites adjunct medication. Allergic reactions are commonly seen as a result of tissue invasion by worms or as a consequence of anthelmintic therapy. Antihistamines and corticosteroids may be necessary adjuncts to therapy. Anemia, indigestion, and secondary bacterial infections can also occur and may requite concomitant therapy with hematopoietic drugs and appropriate antibiotics. [Pg.243]

Barley may have either two or six rows of fertile kernels, and, because it differs ia so many other quaUties, there are several thousand varieties. European breweries almost exclusively use two-row barleys six-row barleys are predominant ia the United States. The two-row barleys are richer ia extract than the six-row. However, the latter is richer ia enzymes which are important when large amounts of adjuncts are being used. [Pg.15]
