A critical survey of literature data on medical polymer adhesives is present . Various classes of polymers are discussed from the point of view of their application in surgery. 

During the last decade, there has been considerable interest in studying the interaction between ultraviolet radiation and polymers by the use of pulsed excimer laser (1-41. In fact, some attractive applications in microelectronics and surgery have been successfully implemented (5.), and further informations about the different mechanisms (photochemistry, thermal effect...) involved at the polymer surface have been invoked in order to elucidate their relative contributions. More recently, the attention has been focused on this type of polymer surface modifications to improve some surface properties like the adhesion in metallized polymer structures.

Adhesives made from cyanoacrylates are among the best known adhesives, sold under trade names such as Super Glue and Crazy Glue. Monomers such as butyl-alpha-cyanoacrylate (Figure 16) polymerize spontaneously in the presence of moisture. The presence of the cyano and acrylate groups, both quite polar, makes this a particularly good adhesive it is used in surgery and for mechanical assemblies. 

Use of KL-3 adhesive In abdominal surgery. KL-3 adhesive was used clinically for resection in ulcerative disease of the stomach and duodenum, in appendectomies, for sealing sutures of the bile duct in choledochos-tomies, and to close the gallbladder bed following cholerystectomies...

As mentioned above, an important property of cyanoacrylates is their ability to form rapidly strong bonds as they undergo anionic/zwitterionic polymerization in the presence of hydroxyl or amino groups, such as with proteins or weak bases. For this reason, PACA have been extensively used in surgery because of their adhesive properties.
