Adhesives animal-hide glues

In order to take advantage of the new abrasive grit materials, new and improved bond systems had to be developed. Subsequently, adhesive systems have also come a long way, progressing from fish and animal hide glues to urea-formaldehyde resins, epoxies, phenolic, and radiation-curable systems. This evolution has placed a continuing demand on the adhesive systems used in the manufacturing of abrasive products. 

Glue made of the collagen of animal hides and skins is widely used as adhesives. Soluble collagen is used extensively in the cosmetics industry as the basis for face creams, lotions and hair formulations.

Early hot melt adhesives were based on ethyl cellulose and animal or hide glues. These were later replaced by synthetic resins such as polyamides and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers. More recently a new class of compounds, referred to as block copolymers because of their unique chemical structure, have emerged. These latter compounds are copolymers of styrene and butadiene, isoprene, or ethylene-butylene which tend to widen the flexibility property range of hot melt adhesives. They probably represent the fastest growing segment of the hot melt adhesives market at the present time. Their primary application is in hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives. Animal glue - This is obtained from the hydrolysis of the protein collagen which is extracted from animal hides and bones. It is still used as an adhesive in wood working and as a paekaging adhesive for tape, fiber cans, and paper tubes. 

Adhesives. Adhesives can be considered as coatings between two surfaces. The classic adhesives were water-susceptible animal and vegetable glues obtained from hides, blood, and starch. Adhesion may be defined as the process that occurs when a solid and movable material (usually in a liquid or solid form) are brought together to form an interface, and the surface energies of the two substances are transformed into the energy of the interface.

Around 1700, the widespread use of glue brought about some rapid changes in the history of adhesives. The first commercial glue factory was started in Holland to manufacture animal glue from hides.

C. is an important RR. The main reason for breeding c. is the production of beef for nutrition. There are also many functional and chemical uses of the by-products - tallow as an important source for fatty acids and derivatives hides for making - leather bones for producing adhesives (- glue, animal). Bile is used as a source for - steroids, and the pancreas is used for - insulin production.
