Many grades of interlayer are produced to meet specific length, width, adhesion, stiffness, surface roughness, color (93,94), and other requirements of the laminator and end use. Sheet can be suppHed with vinyl alcohol content from 15 to about 23 wt %, depending on the suppHer and appHcation. A common interlayer thickness for automobile windshields is 0.76 mm, but interlayer used for architectural or aircraft glaring appHcations, for example, may be much thinner or thicker. There are also special grades to bond rear-view mirrors to windshields (95,96) and to adhere the components of solar cells (97,98). Multilayer coextmded sheet, each component of which provides a separate property not possible in monolithic sheet, can also be made (99—101). [Pg.453]

Matthews et al (1982) have recently published an up-to-date review on the strength of joints in fibre reinforced plastics. They considered both theoretical and experimental results, although mainly the former. The reader is referred to this excellent article. In essence, they concluded that it is necessary to consider non-linear adhesive behaviour if joint strength is to be predicted. Joint strength is improved as the adherend stiffness increases and the adhesive stiffness decreases, and a ductile adhesive is always preferable to a brittle one. [Pg.74]

The method used to apply and dry a fixative affects the degree of stiffness and hold it imparts to the hairstyle. If appHed and then manipulated with a comb, bmsh, or fingers as the polymer forms its film, the adhesive bonds between the hair are broken, the film coating the hair is broken, and the end result is a soft feel with Htde set retention. If the fixative is allowed to dry undisturbed, then the result is a firmer feel and better hold. [Pg.452]

The apex (often referred to as bead filler) compound must be formulated for excellent dynamic stiffness to facilitate stress distribution and provide good car handling properties. Poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions are used to prime-coat fabrics to improve the adhesion of subsequent coatings or to make them adhere better to plastic film. Plasticized emulsions are appHed, generally by roUer-coating, to the backs of finished mgs and carpets to bind the tufts in place and to impart stiffness and hand. An example of interaction stiffness and force curves for a Si surface with a native oxide at 60% relative humidity (RH) is shown in Fig. 12 [104]. The stiffness and force data show an adhesive interaction between the tip and substrate. The hysteresis on retraction is due to a real change in contact area from surface oxide deformation and is not an experimental artifact. The adhesive force observed during retraction was consistent with capillary condensation and the surface energy measured from the adhesive force was close to that of water. [Pg.210]

We have recently been exploring this technique to evaluate the adhesive and mechanical properties of compliant polymers in the form of a nanoscale JKR test. The force and stiffness data from a force-displacement curve can be plotted simultaneously (Fig. 13). For these contacts, the stiffness response appears to follow the true contact stiffness, and the curve was fit (see [70]) to a JKR model. When considering relea.se mechanisms, the physical and chemical heterogeneity of the adhesive/release interface cannot be ignored. At its most basic level, roughness of the release and PSA surface, the stiffness of the PSA and the method in which the PSA and release surface are brought together define the contact area of the interface.
