The lack of focal adhesion reinforcement results in the dispersal of the focal adhesion site. [Pg.282]

Binding and cover attachments use hot melts, emulsion and animal glues. Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and block copolymers are used for these operations. Case making normally uses animal glues to bond the cover materials to the cover boards. Casing in, the attachment of the book block end papers to die eover, involves the use of emulsions or starch based adhesives. Reinforcement involves the attaehment of paper or cheesecloth to the spine of the book. Hot melt adhesives are used for diis operation. [Pg.287]

Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Material. Use of asbestos (qv) has been legally restricted in Europe and the United States as being ha2ardous to health. In asbestos cement, which had consumed 70—80% of total asbestos, PVA fiber has been used in large amount as a replacement for asbestos. PVA fiber has a strength of at least 0.88 N/tex (9 gf/dtex) and can therefore provide the necessary reinforcement for cement the fiber has excellent adhesiveness to cement (qv) and alkaU resistance, and is not a health ha2ard. [Pg.342]

Small amounts of TAIC together with DAP have been used to cure unsaturated polyesters in glass-reinforced thermo sets (131). It has been used with polyfunctional methacrylate esters in anaerobic adhesives (132). TAIC and vinyl acetate are copolymerized in aqueous suspension, and vinyl alcohol copolymer gels are made from the products (133). Electron cure of poly(ethylene terephthalate) moldings containing TAIC improves heat resistance and transparency (134). [Pg.88]

Tire Cord. Melamine resins are also used to improve the adhesion of mbber to reinforcing cord in tires. Textile cord is normally coated with a latex dip solution composed of a vinylpyridine—styrene—butadiene latex mbber containing resorcinol—formaldehyde resin.. The dip coat is cured prior to use. The dip coat improves the adhesion of the textile cord to mbber. Further improvement in adhesion is provided by adding resorcinol and hexa(methoxymethyl) melamine [3089-11 -0] (HMMM) to the mbber compound which is in contact with the textile cord. The HMMM resin and resorcinol cross-link during mbber vulcanization and cure to form an interpenetrating polymer within the mbber matrix which strengthens or reinforces the mbber and increases adhesion to the textile cord. Brass-coated steel cord is also widely used in tires for reinforcement. Steel belts and bead wire are common apphcations. Again, HMMM resins and resorcinol [108-46-3] are used in the mbber compound which is in contact with the steel cord to reinforce the mbber and increase the adhesion of the mbber to the steel cord. This use of melamine resins is described in the patent Hterature (49). [Pg.331]

A grass-like recreational surface system includes the top material directly available for use and observation, backing materials that serve to hold together or reinforce the system, fabric-backing finish, a shock-absorbing underpad system if any, and adhesives (qv) or other joining materials. The system is installed... [Pg.534]

CSPE. Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), a synthetic mbber manufactured by DuPont, is marketed under the name Hypalon. It can be produced as a self-curing elastomer designed to cure on the roof. The membrane is typically reinforced with polyester and is available in finished thicknesses of 0.75 to 1.5 mm. Because CSPE exhibits thermoplastic characteristics before it cures, it offers heat-weldable seams. After exposure on the roof, the membrane cures offering the toughness and mechanical set of a thermoset. The normal shelf life of the membrane for maintaining this thermoplastic characteristic is approximately six months. After the membrane is fully cured in the field, conventional adhesives are needed to make repairs. [Pg.213]

Silicone Heat-Cured Rubber. Sihcone elastomers are made by vulcanising high molecular weight (>5 x 10 mol wt) linear polydimethylsiloxane polymer, often called gum. Fillers are used in these formulations to increase strength through reinforcement. Extending fillers and various additives, eg, antioxidants, adhesion promoters, and pigments, can be used to obtain certain properties (59,357,364). [Pg.53]
