Additive scrubbing

Catacarb process An extraction process used to remove carbon dioxide from process gases by scrubbing the hot gases with potassium carbonate solution containing additives which increase the hydration rate of the gas in the solution. The Vetrocoke process is similar. See Benfield process. [Pg.85]

The effective friction loss, or gas-phase contacting power, is easily determined by direct measurements. However, the liquid-phase contacting power, supplied from the stream of scrubbing liquid, and the mechanical contacting power, supplied by a mechanically driven rotor, are not direc tly measurable the theoretical power inputs can be estimated, but the portions of these quantities effectively converted to contac ting power can only be inferred from comparison with gas-phase contacting power. Such data as are available indicate that the contributions or contacting power from different sources are directly additive in their relation to scrubber performance. [Pg.1592]

For many years a major route to the production of vinyl chloride was the addition of hydrochloric acid to acetylene (Figure 12.5). The acetylene is usually prepared by addition of water to calcium carbide, which itself is prepared by heating together coke and lime. To remove impurities such as water, arsine and phosphine the acetylene may be compressed to 15 Ibf/in (approx. 100 kPa), passed through a scrubbing tower and chilled to -10°C to remove some of the water present and then scrubbed with concentrated sulphuric acid. [Pg.314]

One of the key challenges for this process is dealing with the wide range of contaminants in the waste HBr stream. Both inorganic and organic contaminants may be present. These contaminants are typically reactants and products of the upstream bromination process which generated the waste HBr. In addition, they may include corrosion products of upstream equipment or ionic materials present in the water used to scrub the gaseous bromination process effluent. Spills of endosulfan, according to FAOAVHO (1975a), should be cleaned up by first washing with 5% sodium hydroxide solution and then rinsing with large quantities of water. In addition, empty containers that held endosulfan residues should be rinsed two or three times with water while the sides are scrubbed, and once with 5% sodium hydroxide solution. Thus decontaminated, the empty containers can be recycled and used by pesticide manufacturers to package a chemical similar to endosulfan if the containers remain in good condition and if such reuse is not prohibited by federal, state, or local laws. [Pg.219]

The skin is usually degreased with alcohol followed by a mild acetone scrub. After cleaning, Jessner s solution is appUed to the face with a sable brush, cotton tipped apphcators, cotton balls, or 2 X 2 gauze sponges. The author prefers the use of cotton tipped applicators. Typically, the cheeks are treated first, working from medial to lateral areas followed by application to the chin and forehead area. For superficial peeling, two coats are usually applied. Waste treatment prior to disposal may introduce phase changes which result in quite different pollution control considerations. For example, the gases generated by incineration of a solid waste can be scrubbed with liquid in order to meet an acceptable discharge criterion hence, in addition to ash for disposal, a liquid effluent stream is produced and requires treatment. Other waste treatment processes may result in the liberation of flammable or toxic gaseous emissions as exemplified in Table 16.5. [Pg.498]

In wet scrubbing the dust is removed by counter-current washing with a liquid, usually water, and the solids are removed as a slurry. The principal mechanism involved is the impact (impingement) of the dust particles and the water droplets. Particle sizes down to 0.5 /i.m can be removed in suitably designed scrubbers. In addition to removing solids, wet scrubbers can be used to simultaneously cool the gas and neutralise any corrosive constituents. [Pg.459]
