Adding Multiple Flows

Automation CL measurements can be performed very rapidly and with minimal human participation if the flow system is carefully designed. Several reagents can be added to the sample if multiple flow lines are used and at predetermined times to fulfill the best condition for maximum CL sensitivity. Introduction of special devices into the flow line, which allow procedures otherwise time-consuming such as solvent extraction or ion exchange, improve substantially the sensitivity and selectivity of the technique. [Pg.344]

Most work in microchannel extraction focuses on improving the extraction efficiency or the phase separation or system development through adding multiple imit operations on a single chip or by scaling up. Because laminar flow exists in the microchannel devices, the intimate mixing of turbulent flow in traditional contactors is not present. Most studies have shown that the dissimilar phases flow parallel to each other with movement of solute molecules caused by molecular diffusion only. Thus, extraction is governed by contact time between phases [202]. [Pg.152]

Continuous-Flow Stirred-Tank Reactor. In a continuous-flow stirred-tank reactor (CSTR), reactants and products are continuously added and withdrawn. In practice, mechanical or hydrauHc agitation is required to achieve uniform composition and temperature, a choice strongly influenced by process considerations, ie, multiple specialty product requirements and mechanical seal pressure limitations. The CSTR is the idealized opposite of the weU-stirred batch and tubular plug-flow reactors. Analysis of selected combinations of these reactor types can be useful in quantitatively evaluating more complex gas-, Hquid-, and soHd-flow behaviors. [Pg.505]

The two principal elements of evaporator control are evaporation rate a.ndproduct concentration. Evaporation rate in single- and multiple-effect evaporators is usually achieved by steam-flow control. Conventional-control instrumentation is used (see Sec. 22), with the added precaution that pressure drop across meter and control valve, which reduces temperature difference available for heat transfer, not be excessive when maximum capacity is desired. Capacity control of thermocompression evaporators depends on the type of compressor positive-displacement compressors can utilize speed control or variations in operating pressure level. Centrifugal machines normally utihze adjustable inlet-guide vanes. Steam jets may have an adjustable spindle in the high-pressure orifice or be arranged as multiple jets that can individually be cut out of the system. [Pg.1148]

Semicontinuous production processes can be described in a similar way as batch production processes by adding a duration information to a material flow. This makes it possible to handle the overlapping of independent process orders over multiple stages in campaign planning and semicontinuous production planning. [Pg.267]

Implications For B ethod Development. The effects of the calibration process on precision suggest the need for an additional step in the development of an analytical method. A suggested flow chart is shown in Figure 9. The analyst should first develop a method of adequate accuracy and precision without using calibration curves. The calibration step is then added, and the precision is rechecked. If precision has been excessively degraded, the analyst can choose among alternative calibration strategies, such as use of more standard measurements and use of the multiple-curve procedure. [Pg.129]

This sol-gel procedure is an elaboration on well established entrapment methods [29], but with the added advantage of stability and better flow properties. Interestingly, none of the examples presented thus far demonstrate competitive behavior between multiple ligands (i.e. displacement) in the FAC analysis of trimethoprim and pyrimethamine a reversed order of elution based on is described, but this could simply be due to the shift towards an on-rate limited situation for higher affinity compounds, as described earlier. Erosion of dynamic competition between ligands could occur if the sol-gel allows convective mixing of the entrapped protein however the bimodal pore structure of these materials would... [Pg.237]

Exhausted carbon is sluiced from adsorbers, dewatered, and regenerated in a thermal furnace (multiple hearth, rotary kiln, infrared, or fluidized bed) the regenerated carbon is quenched and washed before returning to the adsorbers new carbon is washed and added to make up for the loss during regeneration (from Ref. 11). Much of the time, treatment-extant literature doesn t provide much guidance when the patient has multiple comorbidities or already has failed best-practice initial interventions. The few available comparative treatment trials that include both medication and psychotherapy all focus on acute treatment or, less commonly, the heroic management of treatment-refractory patients. This leaves out the majority of patients for whom combined treatment is appropriate if not de rigueur, namely those who are partial responders to initial treatment and/or who require a combination of treatments because of comorbidity. Furthermore, for many clinically important decisions, it is unlikely that there will ever be randomized evidence. For example, how many SSRI trials should precede a clomipramine trial in the partially responsive child with OCD Flow long does one wait before adding a SSRI when treating a child with OCD who is not particularly responsive to weekly CBT ... [Pg.438]

The accuracy of multiple dilutions fades as more and more dilutions are made because of the added errors of additional flow measurements. In the double dilution above, four flow measurements are needed, two for each dilution. Fortunately, however, multiple dilutions are used to produce low concentrations where perhaps analysis accuracy of 10% would be acceptable. [Pg.191]
