The distance between two subsequent base pairs along the helical axis is called helical rise (/ ). The pitch (P) is the length of the helix axis for one complete helix turn. The turn angle per nucleotide or twist angle (t) is given by 360°/number of nucleotides per turn. Data describing some properties of A, B, and Z DNA structure are found in Table 2.3 as adapted from Table 1.10 of reference 13 and the Jena image library website address above. [Pg.45]

A 5-I. round-bottom flask is fitted with a rubber stopper or a cork stopper coated with pitch, carrying two glass tubes, one of which (for the entrance of steam) reaches to the bottom of the flask, while the other extends into the open end of a condenser set for downward distillation. The stopper should be wired into the flask. The glass delivery tube into the condenser should not be less than a 12-mm. bore, and the condenser should consist of two 120-cm. water-cooled condensers attached end to end. To the end of the condensing system, an adapter is attached, the small end of which is at least 8 mm. in bore and is fitted tightly into a stopper in a 2-1. suction flask. To the side-... [Pg.76]

As soon as catapult machines were adapted to siege warfare, larger and more effective incendiary missiles were developed. The first incendiary missiles consisted of large stones coated with flammable materials, such as pitch, tar, sulfur, etc... [Pg.330]

Several techniques have been proposed for modifying the shape of the short-time spectrum so as to emphasize those portions deemed to be important for speech perception or to reduce the amplitude of those portions assumed to be noise. One approach is adaptive comb filtering[Lim et al., 1978], In this method, the fundamental frequency of voiced speech sounds is estimated, and a comb fdter is then constructed to pass signal power in the regions of the pitch harmonics and to suppress power in the valleys in between. Experimental results with normal-hearing subjects, however, have shown no significant improvement in intelligibility with this type of system [Perlmutter et al., 1977][Lim et al., 1978],... [Pg.149]

Once the width of the analysis window for a particular frame has been specified, the pitch-adaptive Hamming window w (n) is computed and normalized according to... [Pg.477]

Another simple point is that presentations should be made and given that are adapted to the audience rather than being a standard pitch. Too often the complaint is heard from one side or the other that they sat through a 30- or 40-minute dissertation of irrelevant material, or worse, hopped from one presentation to another because the information relevant to that meeting had not been collated into a coherent presentation. A practical advantage is provision of hard copies of the material as well as in electronic format - on the day - on CD, memory stick or similar device. This has increasingly become the standard of professional courtesy and if information is not provided this way it is seen as a negative point. [Pg.147]

Figure 5.16 Schematic model for the arrangement of amylopectin in potato starch. Crystalline layers containing double helical linear segments in amylopectin molecules form a continuous network consisting of left-handed helices packed in tetragonal arrays. Neighboring molecules are shifted relative to each other by half the helical pitch. (Adapted with permission from reference 3)...
