Adams, John Couch (1819-92) British astronomer who became professor of astronomy and geometry at Cambridge University in 1858. He is best known for his prediction (1845) of the existence and position of the planet Neptune, worked out independently the following year by Urbain Leverrier (1811-77). The planet was discovered in 1846 by Johann Galle (1812-1910), using Lever-rier s figures. Adams s priority was not acknowledged.

Adams, John (1735-1826) and Thomas Jefferson served together on the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence and as fellow diplomats before returning to join George Washington s administration, Adams as Vice-President, Jefferson as Secretary of State. Bitter rivals for the presidency in 1800, they resumed their friendship in retirement, both dying on the 50th anniversary of July 4> 1776-... 

Ibuprofen (2-arylpropionate derivatives) contains a stereocenter in the a-position of the propinate moiety. Ibuprofen is also known as Advil, Genpril, Ibu, Midol, Motrin, and Nuprin. Ibuprofen was developed during the 1960s by the research arm of Boots Group in the UK. Stewart Adams, John Nicholson, and Collin Burrows discovered this compound and patented it in 1961. In 1969, this drug was launched as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in the UK and later on was launched in the USA in 1974. The clinical outcomes of ibuprofen as a treatment for pain, inflammation, and fever won Boots Group the Queens Award for Technical Achievement in 1987.
