Arrhenius. Svante August

Arrhenius, Svante August (1859-1927) Swedish Chemist, physicist Svante August Arrhenius was born in Vik (or Wijk), near Uppsala, Sweden, on February 19, 1859. He was the second son of Svante Gustav Arrhenius and Carolina Christina (nee Thunberg). [Pg.17]

Arrhenius, Svante August won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the electrical conductivity of salt solutions (he was also nominated for the Physics Prize). He is often hailed as a pioneer of modern environmentalism for his work on the greenhouse effect. One of his predictions was that the United States might pump its last barrel of oil in 1935. Fortunately he was proved wrong, but his concern about the world s natural mineral resources and the need for alternative sources of energy was prescient. He died in 1927 at age 68. [Pg.48]

Arrhenius, Svante August (1859-1927) Swedish scientist in Stockholm, originally a physicist, but often referred to as a chemist, and one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. [Pg.599]

Arrhenius, Svante August (1859-1927) A Swedish physicist and chemist who did fundamental work on physical chemistry. He worked with van t Hoff in Amsterdam and proposed a theory of activated molecules and established a coimecdon between rate of reaction and absolute temperature. He also developed a theory for electrolytic dissociation based on van t Hoff s results and stated that any acid, base, or salt dissolved in water is partly split up into positively and negatively charged ions, and that they move in opposite directions on electrolysis. He was awarded a Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903. [Pg.17]
