Solution Studies. The solubility of additives within an optical fiber coating material is of prime importance since particulates can damage the surface of the glass (14) in addition to causing pinholes or tears in the coating. Solubility data for a number of commercial stabilizers are summarized in Table I. The most soluble stabilizers in the acrylate diluent are monomeric materials, particularly those with long alkyl chains. [Pg.303]

Figure 9.7 shows how the reflectance depends on the amount of titania pigment added to an acrylic coating. Two different dispersants were used. As reference, a commonly used dispersant, Dispex N-40, an aqueous sodium salt solution of an acrylic copolymer, was tested in the study. The other dispersant was Bindzil CC 151 HS, an aqueous glycerolpropylsilyl-modified silica dispersion with a particle size of about 5 nm... [Pg.132]

Although the architecture of tumor blood vessels has been studied using a number of techniques, one of the most fascinating involves the use of acrylic resin casts. This is exemplified by the work of Skinner et al (1), who studied a series of chemically induced tumors in rats. A resin solution was injected intraarterially into the anesthetized rat, the animal was killed, and the blood vessels to the tissue, were clamped while the resin set. Tissue was digested with alkali and the cast coated with gold and examined by electron microscopy. Whereas normal colon mucosa showed a consistent regular pattern, tissue from tumors showed considerable disorganization with marked dilation and tortuosity of capillaries. For small tumors it was possible to discern areas in the tumor that... [Pg.133]

TH" attached to poly(V-methylolacrylamide-co-acrylic acid), etc., was coated on a Pt electrode. Its cyclic voltammogram showed the formation of a complex between the coated dye and ferric/ferrous cyanide present in the solution. When the electrode is illuminated in a Fe aqueous solution, cathodic polarization at the coated electrode is observed, in contrast to the bare electrode dipped in a mixture of TH and Fe ", which gave an anodic response at the electrode" . It was proposed that, for the polymer-coated electrode, the excited states of TH and Fe " form a complex, which is stabilized by the polymer network and accepts an electron from the electrode. A flash photolysis study showed the formation of such a complex... [Pg.214]

Fluorinated poly(methacrylates) or poly(acrylates), rich in trifluoromethyl groups, exhibit superior performance of chemical inertness, excellent weatherability, low refractive index, lower dielectric constant, and special surface properties [14,61]. Poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate), poly(MATRIF), is an important class of such materials. It has been extensively used in high performance coatings [17], photoelectric communications, and microelectronics [62]. Poly(MATRIF) is easily produced by free radical polymerization using bulk, solution, and emulsion polymerization methods [63]. Structural characterization of NMR of poly(MATRIF) prepared by radical and anionic polymerization has been studied. Syndiotactic structure was obtained by radical initiator in contrast to an isotactic structure achieved by anionic polymerization [64]. [Pg.456]

Relatively few studies have been made on the feasibility of quantitative FAB analysis. Riley et al. [217] have described a quantification procedure to monitor the paint additive Tinuvin 770 in two coating systems (acrylic melamine and a hydroxy ester melamine). Tinuvin 770 proved to be well suited for FAB analysis in coating extracts on glycerol basis using an internal standardisation procedure. Lay et al. [218] have developed a FAB-MS method for the quantitative analysis of plasticisers (DEHP, including any isomeric dioctyl phthalates) in baby PVC pacifiers that does not require sample extraction, clean-up, or chromatographic separation. A reference material, didecylphthalate (DDP), was added to a solution of the PVC sample in THF as an internal standard. Quantitation was based on the relative... [Pg.650]
