Acrid flavor

In this formula, heavy doses of Mume are used based on the ability of the sour flavor to control roundworms. Before being calmed, these were stirring and harassing. Zanthoxylum and Asarum are acrid flavored and are able to expel worms. Their nature is also warm, so they can warm the viscera and dispel cold. Coptis and Phellodendron are bitter and this bitterness is able to precipitate the roundworms. In addition, their coldness is able to clear heat above. The use of the above ingredients is based on the saying ... [Pg.218]

SAFETY PROFILE Moderately toxic by ingestion. Mildly toxic by skin contact. A skin irritant. A synthetic flavoring substance and adjuvant. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. [Pg.837]

SAFETY PROFILE Poison by intravenous, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous routes. Moderately toxic by ingestion. Serious physiological consequences from abuse of absinthe (mainly in France) led to its aboKtion in 1915. Wormwood is still used in concentrations of less than 10 ppm in flavored wines. Thujone at 30 mg/kg causes convulsions associated with lesions of the cerebral cortex. Little is known of thujone metabolism. Both forms occur in wormwood oil, oak moss. The a form is major constituent of cedar leaf oil or oil of thuja, sage. The p form occurs in tansy, yarrow. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. [Pg.1341]

This acid has a particularly pungent and acrid odor reminiscent of Roquefort cheese and of other cheeses. The taste is acrid-acid but becomes fruity-sour below 10 ppm (Arctander, 1967). By GC-olfactometry, the odor perception, in the evaluation of the aroma of a roasted Columbian coffee, is sweaty, fermented together with the 3-methyl isomer, the contribution to coffee flavor is very important (Holscher et al., 1990). In the aroma of a green coffee, it is described as weak, fermented (Holscher and Steinhart, 1995). Karl et al. (1992) showed that the enantiomers have different odors, the (R)-isomer being cheesy and the (5)-isomer fruity. [Pg.156]

This compound is very diffusive, acid-acrid in moderate dilution it has a cheesy, unpleasant odor. In extreme dilution the odor becomes more agreeable, herbaceous (Arctander, 1967). The odor perception by GC-olfactometry is strong, sweaty in roasted (Holscher et al., 1990) and green Columbian coffee (Holscher and Steinhart, 1995). Together with the 2-methyl isomer, it makes an important contribution in coffee flavor. [Pg.157]

Some species of psilocybian mushrooms have a not-disagreeable flavor and may be eaten neat, but the majority of species have a strong acrid taste which, while not bitter, some find to be revolting and quite as difficult to tolerate as the taste oip otl. To overcome this, epicurean consumers blend smoothies with raw or dried psilocybian mushrooms, using strong-flavored fruit or chocolate to kill the taste. Hot cocoa in water or milk is a common vehicle, providing good flavor as well as his-... [Pg.146]

These peptones are usually sold in the form of very light amorphous powders, very hygroscopic, of a slight acrid and bitter flavor, and with an odor resembling that of spoiled broth. Soluble in water, they are incompletely precipitable by alcohol. These products are said to be easily assimilable, and accordingly are used in the diet of tuberculous, cancerous, and debilitated patients. According to the case, a dose of 5 to 50 g. of dry peptone is prescribed per day. We also use them in an associated... [Pg.572]
