Methylesculetol-6,7-dinicotinate (32) is useful as an antiinflammatory and vasodilator oflow toxicity (101). The synthesis of asarone [5555-15-1] (2,4,5-trimethoxy-l-propenylbenzene), which is used as a tranquilizer, has been patented (102). It occurs in calamus root, Acorns calamus L.y and is a chemosterilant for insects (103). 6,7-Dihydroxycoumarin-4-methylsulfonic acid and its salts are useful in the treatment of capillary permeability and fragility and for protecting oxidizable metabolites and drugs against biooxidation (104). Certain chromones derived from hydroxyhydroquinone, eg (33), and its salts, esters, and amides are valuable in the prophylactic treatment of asthma (105) (see Antiasthmatic agents). 2-Methoxy-6-multiprenyl-l,4-benzoquinones are intermediates in the microbiological synthesis of coenzyme Q compounds (106). [Pg.381]

Calamus Oil Acorns calamus) An Indian water plant whose roots supply the oil, which has an average of 80% asarone. In 1969, the FDA ruled that asarone was carcinogenic so it was banned for all food uses. Since then, sources for this oil have sometimes looked to alternative origins other than India. Lots of holistic companies prefer to use the calamus oil from Europe and Russia because they contain almost no asarone. I think it s fraudulent to pass off asarone-free calamus oil as the real thing because it s the asarone that makes it what it is. Anyway, that is just a warning to you to make sure your calamus comes from India of which there are still plenty of suppliers. In Table X is the component breakdown of atypical calamus oil sample [2, vol.III, p. 183]. [Pg.117]

There are four varieties of Acorns calamus based on content of isoasarone (P-asarone c/s-isoasarone), which has been shown to cause duodenal tumors in rats (Tyler, 1993). Type I is found in North America and contains practically no isoasarone (Anonymous, 1996). Type II is found in Europe and the oil contains <10% isoasarone, while the oils of types III and IV contain up to 96% isoasarone. [Pg.234]

A paragraph is given to herbal medicine as practiced in Tibet, with the comment that many of their substances have bad side effects, the same as for conventional chemotherapy. Some of these substances are aconite (Aconitum ferrox), which is very poisonous, sweet flag or calamus (Acorns calamus), bitumen, and arsenic, all of which require close monitoring. [Pg.248]
