Acid deposition definition

In-cloud chemical processes transform soluble trace gases into various ionic products. In the case of acid precursors, such as SO2 and NO2, definitions of the significant chemical reactions in aqueous cloud droplets are necessary for the mathematical description of acid deposition. These significant reactions can be inferred from measurements in the real atmosphere (1,2), and they can be identified in controlled laboratory experiments (3,4). The new, hi er quality data do not resolve all the estimation difficulties, however. Because quantified damage functions are unavailable for sane materials at risk, comprehensive coverage is still not possible. In addition, estimating the aesthetic losses from the deterioration of cultural resources requires survey data, which are not available. Furthermore, major uncertainties in the physical damage functions are yet to be resolved, and these uncertainties are directly translated to the final economic estimates. Thus, at this point in time, the analysis cannot definitively establish the magnitude of all adverse effects the analysis can, however, provide a better indication than heretofore possible of whether or not the material damages from acid deposition are economically important. 

No single description or definition adequately covers all lubricants or lubrication processes. For example, we have seen that a fluid can function as a lubricant by virtue of its viscosity as a liquid. We have also seen that a monomolecular film of stearic acid deposited on a metal surface acts as a lubricant and dramatically reduces the coefficient of friction. A polymeric substance such as polymethylmethacrylate when dissolved in an oil will increase its viscosity and improve its loadcarrying performance in the hydrodynamic lubrication process. Stearic acid dissolved in a carrier oil can effect a strong reduction in the coefficient of friction for metal rubbed against metal. 

The scientific panel that the White House handpicked to carry out the review sent the President a report that again strongly recommended action on acid rain. Under the chairmanship of William Nierenberg, Director of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the panel concluded that, "It is in the nature of the acid deposition problem that actions have to be taken despite incomplete knowledge. .. If we take the conservative point of view that we must wait until the scientific knowledge is definitive, the accumulated deposition and damaged environment may reach the point of irreversibility. . ...
