Accumulation Processes

In the accumulation process explained in the previous section, data points collected during several scans and measured at corresponding time values, are added. One could also consider to accumulate the values of a number of data points in a small segment or window in the same scan. This is the principle of smoothing, which is explained in more detail below. 

In a batch process the final poly(3HB) content is determined by the specific poly(3HB) formation rate qp (in g poly(3HB) per g poly(3HB)-free dry mass per h) and the duration of the accumulation process (t). It can be pre-calculated according to the following equation ...

Chemical Stability. Chemical stability is just as important as the physical stability just discussed. In general, chemical deterioration of the polymers is no problem, and they can be stored at room temperature for years. However, the polymeric surfaces are subjected to an extreme variety of chemicals during the accumulation process. Some of these may react with the polymer. For example, reactions of styrene-divinylbenzene polymers and Tenax with the components of air and stack gases have been documented (336, 344, 540). The uptake of residual chlorine from water solutions has also been observed in my laboratory and elsewhere (110, 271, 287). Although the homogeneous nature of synthetic polymers should tend to reduce the number of these reactions relative to those that occur on heterogeneous surfaces of activated carbons, the chemical reaction possibility is real. In the development of methods for specific chemicals, the polymer stability should always be checked. On occasion, these checks may lead to... 

Equilibrium in an accumulation process is empirically defined as the point at which a partitioning coefficient becomes invariant (reaches steady state), and theoretically as the point at which the fugacity ratio equals 1 (21). With phytoplankton, most published reports indicated that equilibrium was reached in a matter of hours (6, 8, 22-26). As a result, predictions of HOC accumulation in phytoplankton have been expressed as equilibrium-based equations exclusively.

That these accumulation processes did not occur on the surface of the inside of Building 5b may be explained by the different type of ma-... 

It is convenient to divide the deposition of carbonates in marine sediments into those being deposited in shallow (shoal) water (water depths of a few hundred meters or less) and those being deposited in deep sea sediments, where the water depth is on the order of kilometers. The primary reasons for this division are the differing sources, dominant mineralogies, and accumulation processes operative in these environments. Shoal water carbonates are the topic of Chapter 5. Naturally, there are "grey" areas of intermediate characteristics between these two extremes, such as continental slopes and the flanks of carbonate banks and atolls. 

The central zone of the shelf is dominated by accumulation processes, which results in smoothing and burying of relic topographic features. This zone is 35-90 km wide and occupies areas with sea depths from 40 to 60 m. 

The experiments reported here also have been useful in evaluating various current proposals regarding the nature of the accumulation process. The view is widely held that accumulations of the type described here can be attributed to the operation of transport catalysts... 

Since numerous temporary piping connections are made to accommodate multipurpose use of several tanks during a campaign, leaks and/or small spills can occur. Thus, the cell cubicle floors and external portions of the equipment are flushed thoroughly after each campaign. All of the rework materials obtained between campaigns are accumulated, processed by means of one or two cycles of the Cleanex batch extraction process to remove miscellaneous impurities, and recycled to the next campaign. 

The fact is that the walls of the delousing buildings are saturated through and through with hydrogen cyanide compounds, of which only a part becomes visible as iron blue, predominantly in damp areas and at the surfaces due to accumulation processes. These facts can be explained only as a result of fumigations with HCN. 

The assimilation of vanadium by tunicates into vanadocytes clearly involves two of the three accumulation processes mentioned earlier membrane transport and intracellular reduction. Many questions remain, however, concerning the role of complex formation in the initial stages of transport through the environment/blood plasma barrier, and in the nature of the intracellular reduction of V(V) to V(III). These, and the questions of vanadium function and intracellular form should yield to future investigations. 

Homogeneous Nucleation Homogeneous nucleation is based on accretion of molecules in the liquid phase. Single species (molecules or ions) come together and form dimers. Dimers become trimers by addition of a molecule, and this accumulation process continues until eventually a stable nucleus forms depending on temperature and supers aturation.
