Accomodation

The binding site is located at the tip of the subunit within the jelly roll structure (Figure 5.23). The sialic acid moiety of the hemagglutinin inhibitors binds in the center of a broad pocket on the surface of the barrel (Figure 5.24). In addition to this groove there is a hydrophobic channel that can accomodate large hydrophobic substituents at the C2 position of sialic acid (Figures 5.22 and 5.24). [Pg.80]

PORV operation, or rupture. A reactor is designed to accomodate these releases a keep the radioactivity confined. Even in a damaged state, a power plant affords a t< path for release and a large surface for plate-out. [Pg.310]

One possible explanation is that adamantyl cation, an intermediate in the reaction, is particularly unstable because it cannot accomodate a planar carbocation center (see Chapter 1, Problem 9). Examine the geometry of adamantyl cation. Does it incorporate a planar carbocation center Compare electrostatic potential maps of adamantyl cation and 2-methyl-2-propyl cation. Which cation better delocalizes the positive charge Assuming that the more delocalized cation is also the more stable cation, would you expect adamantyl tosylate to react slower or faster than tcrf-butyl tosylate Calculate the energy of the reaction. [Pg.98]

Another possible explanation is that 2-methyl-2-propyl cation allows better access to solvent than adamantyl cation. Examine hydrates of 2-methyl-2-propyl and adamantyl cations. How many water molecules does each accomodate Calculate hydration energies for the two cations. (The energy of water is provided at left.)... [Pg.98]

For our discussions, we have been using PLS to generate calibrations for all components simultaneously. Unlike PCR, it can often be advantageous to generate PLS calibrations for one component at a time. This allows PLS to find the best compromise factors for each individual component by ignoring the compromises that would be needed to accomodate the other components. When PLS is used to calibrate multiple components simultaneously, it is often called PLS-2. When used to generate calibrations for one component at a time it is often called PLS-1. [Pg.145]

The two variable terms should yield very abrupt variations in the Ej(r)-modulus, since the generally large differences between the moduli of the inclusions and the matrix must be accomodated in very thin peels for the mesophases. The appropriate functions for such steep variations are power functions of radii r with large adhesion exponentsq. Then, the Ej(r)-modulus may be expressed by ... [Pg.161]

In this way, both boundaries of the mesophase layer with the inclusion and the matrix are automatically satisfied and, therefore, Equation (29) is a convenient relationship, yielding the variable Ej(r)-modulus accomodating, in a natural way, the smooth transition from a large Ef-modulus to a reduced Em-modulus for the matrix and vice versa. [Pg.163]

This kind of mesophase, which was also detected by various experimental methods, possesses variable properties, accomodating the two extremes between inclusions and matrices. [Pg.185]

Two versions of an alternate model were also introduced, where the mesophase layer was assumed as possessing variable mechanical and physical properties, accomodating a smooth transition of the properties of the inclusions with those of the matrix, by assuring in a very short distance the progressive, from the inclusion-matrix boundaries outwards, change of the characteristic quantities of the one phase, in order to match those of the other phase. [Pg.185]

The competition between the polar and steric dipoles of molecules may also lead to internal frustration. In this case, the local energetically ideal configuration cannot be extended to the whole space, but tends to be accomodated by the appearance of a periodic array of defects. For example, the presence of the strong steric dipole at the head of a molecule forming bilayers will induce local curvature. As the size of the curved areas increases, an increase in the corresponding elastic energy makes energetically preferable the... [Pg.211]

Figure 4. Side and top views of the energetically most favorable complexes formed between protonated cinchonidine and methyl pyruvate which would yield (R)-methyl lactate (left) and (S)-methyl lactate (right), respectively, upon hydrogenation. The complexes have been accomodated on a space filling model of platinum (111) surface in order to illustrate the space requirements of the adsorbed complexes. For the sake of clarity, in the side views the carbon atoms of the reactant are marked with a white square and the oxygen atoms with an o. Data taken from ref. [41]. Figure 4. This seems to imply that the associated distortion of the cage is only large for one atom (not two as for the type a structures) and therefore possibly better accomodated by the defects defined in Table 4. It must be concluded that either structures b and c are chemically unrealistic or there is a subtle, but significant, stabilisation provided by a complete geometry optimisation. [Pg.453]

Hydrophobic interaction chromatograph (HIC), while very attractive in principle, has proved difficult to scale up for processing. A recent series of articles explores some of the unique problems associated with process-scale HIC. Load sample preparation20 must be carefully examined to prevent protein aggregate formation in the presence of the relatively high salt concentrations used in this technique. Successful scale-up also requires the setting of wide specifications to accomodate routine variations in the feed.21 The effect of the salt concentration on capacity may be somewhat more... [Pg.104]

The catechol-type ligand appears to be restricted to siderochromes derived from prokaryotic microorganisms. Klebsiella oxytoca, an organism closely related to members of the genus Aerobacter, forms the 2,3-dihy-droxy-N-benzoyl derivates of serine and threonine in three day cultures (72). It is not known if the latter amino acid occurs in trimers but examination of space-filling CPK models does indicate that enterobactin could accomodate a methyl substituent on the carbon of the serine residue. Catechols occur in higher protist organisms but their formation... [Pg.160]

Unlike the crystalline cycloamylose complexes, combining ratios of host to guest in solution are usually 1 1. A notable exception is the interaction of the cycloamyloses with long chain aliphatic carboxylic acids. Solubility plots suggest that as many as four cycloheptaamylose molecules may interact with a single molecule of dodecanoic acid (Schlenk and Sand, 1961). In analogy to the crystalline state, cycloamyloses may form channels in solution in order to accomodate extended chains. [Pg.215]
