Abstinence method

The abstinence (rhythm) method is not well accepted, as it is associated with relatively high pregnancy rates and necessitates avoidance of intercourse for several days in each cycle. 

Relapse prevention, as mentioned, is compatible with a variety of treatment models. For example, many Minnesota-model facilities have incorporated aspects of cognitive behavioral relapse prevention into their treatment and aftercare programs. There have been efforts to combine the relapse prevention model with disease-model instructions to maintain abstinence after treatment is completed. Minnesota-model relapse prevention is generally begun late in treatment and then continued into aftercare. There are numerous books and manuals that have incorporated relapse prevention methods into this particular model. 

The primary alkaloid in tobacco is nicotine, but tobacco also contains small amounts of minor alkaloids such as anabasine, anatabine, myosmine, and others. The minor alkaloids are absorbed systemically and can be measured in the urine of smokers and users of smokeless tobacco (Jacob et al. 1999). The measurement of minor alkaloids is a way to quantitate tobacco use when a person is also taking in pure nicotine from a nicotine medication or a nontobacco nicotine delivery system. This method has been used to assess tobacco abstinence in clinical trials of smoking cessation with treatment by nicotine medications (Jacob et al. 2002). 

Must have selected and has committed to using 2 forms of effective contraception simultaneously, at least 1 of which must be a primary form, unless absolute abstinence is the chosen method, or the patient has undergone a hysterectomy. Patients must use 2 forms of effective contraception for at least 1 month prior to initiation of isotretinoin therapy, during isotretinoin therapy, and for 1 month after discontinuing isotretinoin therapy. Counseling about contraception and behaviors associated with an increased risk of pregnancy must be repeated on a monthly basis.

Due to the intense study of the problem of drug addiction, the methods of treatment are improved annually. Substitution of the administration of methadone for morphine followed by withdrawal from methadone is a recent advance in withdrawal therapy. This chapter summarizes the methods and results of seven studies (1-7) in which the author examined the acute or chronic effects of marijuana on human associative processes and memory. Both semantic and episodic memory were examined.
