In 1960, Harrick demonstrated that, for transparent substrates, absorption spectra of adsorbed layers could be obtained using internal reflection [42]. By cutting the sample in a specific trapezoidal shape, the IR beam can be made to enter tlirough one end, bounce internally a number of times from the flat parallel edges, and exit the other end without any losses, leading to high adsorption coeflScients for the species adsorbed on the external surfaces of the plate (Irigher than in the case of external reflection) [24]. In an ambitious study, the AIMS method was used to calculate the absorption and resonance Raman spectra of ethylene [221]. In this, sets starting with 10 functions were calculated. Heat Transfer in Rotary Kilns. Heat transfer in rotary kilns occurs by conduction, convection, and radiation. In a highly simplified model, the treatment of radiation can be explained by applying a one-dimensional furnace approximation (19). The gas is assumed to be in plug flow the absorptivity, a, and emissivity, S, of the gas are assumed equal (a = e ) and the presence of water in the soHds is taken into account. Thickness. The traditional definition of thermal conductivity as an intrinsic property of a material where conduction is the only mode of heat transmission is not appHcable to low density materials. Although radiation between parallel surfaces is independent of distance, the measurement of X where radiation is significant requires the introduction of an additional variable, thickness. The thickness effect is observed in materials of low density at ambient temperatures and in materials of higher density at elevated temperatures. It depends on the radiation permeance of the materials, which in turn is influenced by the absorption coefficient and the density. For a cellular plastic material having a density on the order of 10 kg/m, the difference between a 25 and 100 mm thick specimen ranges from 12—15%. The dielectric properties of most foods, at least near 2450 MH2, parallel those of water, the principal lossy constituent of food (Fig. 1).
