In the early years of this century the periodic table ended with element 92 but, with J. Chadwick s discovery of the neutron in 1932 and the realization that neutron-capture by a heavy atom is frequently followed by j6 emission yielding the next higher element, the synthesis of new elements became an exciting possibility. E. Fermi and others were quick to attempt the synthesis of element 93 by neutron bombardment of but it gradually became evident that the main result of the process was not the production of element 93 but nuclear fission, which produces lighter elements. However, in 1940, E. M. McMillan and P. H. Abelson in Berkeley, California, were able to identify, along with the fission products, a short-lived isotope of... [Pg.1251]

FIGURE 8.13 Nonreceptor PTKs. These protein kinases form a large family, and most of them contain SH2 and SH3 domains. Several were originally discovered as transforming genes of a viral genome, hence names such as src or abl, derived from Rous sarcoma virus or Abelson murine leukemia virus, respectively. Abelson (1956) carried out experiments using atmospheres containing CCb, (CO), N2, (NH3), H2 and H2O and detected small amounts of simple amino acids, the formation of which was prevented by adding oxygen. Many of the Miller-Urey experiments involved various energy sources and were carried out in the liquid and solid states as well as on gas mixtures. [Pg.89]

Initially, we had planned to publish a single volume on this subject. However, the remarkable response to my requests for chapters allowed us to scale up to three volumes. I would like to express my sincerest appreciation and admiration for the contributors to this endeavor. I am impressed with the outstanding quality of the work produced by the authors, ah of whom are leaders in the field. I am especially grateful to John Abelson for giving me the opportunity to edit this publication and for his support and advice throughout the project. Finally, I am indebted to Cindy Minor and the staff at Elsevier for their help and wisdom along the way. [Pg.12]
