Blood vessels that supply the abdominal organs, muscle, and mesentery serve as the blood component of the system. 

Exploratory laparotomy Surgical incision into the abdominal cavity, performed to examine the abdominal organs and cavity in search of an abnormality and diagnosis. 

Chemical stimuli also underlie pain secondary to inflammation or ischemia (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction), or the intense pain that occurs during overdistention or spasmodic contraction of smooth muscle abdominal organs, and that may be maintained by local anoxemia developing in the area of spasm (visceral pain).

The diaphragm is observed and then removed together with the remaining abdominal organs.

Infiltration anesthesia is the injection of local anesthetic directly into tissue without taking into consideration the course of cutaneous nerves. Infiltration anesthesia can be so superficial as to include only the skin. It also can include deeper structures such as intra-abdominal organs when these too are infiltrated. The advantage of infiltration anesthesia and other regional anesthetic techniques is that it is possible to provide satisfactory anesthesia without disruption of normal bodily functions.

Table 112-1 summarizes many of the potential causes of bacterial peritonitis.
