Plug back cementations, i.e. cement placement inside the casing and across the perforations may be required prior to sidetracking a well or in the course-of abandonment.

In offshore operations, exploration wells are almost always plugged and abandoned even when they strike petroleum. Their sole function is to find oil or gas and to delineate the reservoir. The operator uses this information to pick a location for a permanent production platform from which development wells will be drilled to recover as much petroleum as economically possible. In onshore operations, however, successful exploration wells also become producers. 

The space velocity for a given conversion is often used as a ready measure of the performance of a reactor. The use of equation 1.25 to calculate reaction time, as if for a batch reactor, is not to be recommended as normal practice it can be equated to VJv only if there is no change in volume. Further, the method of using reaction time is a blind alley in the sense that it has to be abandoned when the theory of tubular reactors is extended to take into account longitudinal and radial dispersion and other departures from the plug flow hypothesis which are important in the design of catalytic tubular reactors (Chapter 3, Section 3.6.1)...

Sand entry into the well bottom creates serious problems during oil production both by in situ combustion methods and by cyclic steaming of the reservoir. Carried in with the oil, the sand can abrade equipment, both in the well and at surface installations it foims plugs on well bottoms, reduces oil output and may even force the abandonment of production wells. With in situ combustion, these problems are aggravated because of high rates of production that are required in order to achieve cost-effectiveness of the process. This means that individual sections of the oil Held, 2 to 5 ha in area, may have to be fully exploited within 3 to 3.3 years. Such high rates of reservoir exploitation become difficult to obtain because of sanding of production wells.
