Molybdenum compounds are effective in PVC, especially when coupled with zinc compounds. In addition, these compositions are flame-retardant. For example, 1.5 phr. of Sb20s and 1.5 phr. of Kemgard 911 in plasticized PVC raised the oxygen index from 28 to 33.5 % while the mass of solid particles filtered from the combustion products in an Arapahoe smoke chamber (cf. Fig. 4.1 in Section 4.1.1.1) lessened by 32.6 per cent. 4 phr. of the same additives in rigid PVC enhanced the oxygen index from 41 to 58 % and reduced smoke production by 48 per cent. ...

Both metallic zinc and zinc compounds and are known in an art context. Bieganska et al. (1988) describe the use of flakes of metallic zinc while according to the Merck Index (1996), mosaic gold q.vl) can also refer to an alloy of 65.3% copper and 34.7% zinc. Y Picoline. Commercially pure y-picoline contains )S-picoline and 2 6-lutidine and sometimes traces of non-basic impurities (aromatic hydrocarbons) which cannot be separated by fractionation. The non-basic impurities are removed by steam distillation of the base in dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acid solution (for details, see under a Picoline). The impure y-picoline is converted into the zinc chloride complexes of the component bases the 2 6-lutidine - ZnClj complex is the least stable and upon steam distillation of the mixture of addition compounds suspended in water, 2 6-lutidine passes over flrst. The complete separation of the 2 6-lutidine may be detected by a determination of the density and the refractive index of the dry recovered base at varioiu stages of the steam distillation. The results are reported of studies on PVC formulations, which show that lead-free, heat stable, flexible PVC compounds can be prepared through the proper selection of calcium/zinc stabilisers combined with selected costabilisers, fillers and other additives. The preparation of PVC insulation and sheathing compounds having oxygen index values greater than 30% using a combination of Firebrake ZB zinc borate and a phosphate ester plasticiser is also demonstrated. 6 refs.
