Zanthoxylum cuspidatum

Non-hemiterpenoid Quinolines.—New sources of the simple quinolines 4-methoxy-l-methyl-2-quinolone and its 8-methoxy-derivative (folimine) have been reported the former was isolated from Myrtopsis sellingii9 and from Zanthoxylum cuspidatum,16 and folimine was shown to be a constituent of Haplophyllum perforatum.5 The latter species also contains foliosidine (9), previously isolated from H. foliosum. The micro-organism Pseudomonas aertiginosa has been shown to contain 2-(hept-l-enyl)-4-quinolone (12).10 The structure of the alkaloid was established by n.m.r. and mass spectroscopy and by its synthesis from aniline and the j3-keto-ester Me(CH2)4CH=CHC0CH2C02Me. 

Work on alkaloid isolation is summarized in Table 11.3 2—396 Arnottianamide (145 R = H, R = Me) and isoarnottianamide (145 R = Me, R = H) have been isolated as minor constituents of Zanthoxylum cuspidatum. These amides can be obtained chemically by Baeyer-Villiger-type oxidation of the immonium group in chelery-thrine and nitidine respectively and a similar biogenesis is suggested. Propiovanillone has been identified in Quercus rubra wood (152) and some phenylglycerol compounds are also found in various woody species. Thus, guaiacylglycerol (33) has been found in the sapwood of western hemlock (11) and the heartwood of Pinus resinosa (142). Further, the 1-O-glucoside and the 1-0-and 3-O-glucosides of p-hydroxyphenylglycerol have been reported from the inner bark of Larix leptolepis (105) and Picea glehnii (145), respectively, and an iso-prene derivative of the 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propan-l-ol has been isolated from wood and bark of Zanthoxylum cuspidatum (86).
