Writing improvement

How might your writing improve by reading authentic examples of chemical writing (e.g., journal articles, posters, research proposals) ... 

Handbooks, textbooks, usage manuals, and any number of general works are filled with the problems common to technical writing. Improvement in these typical areas will immediately improve your writing overall. 

In this paper we present a number of time integrators for various problems ranging from classical to quantum molecular dynamics. These integrators share some common features they are new, they are second-order accurate and time-reversible, they improve substantially over standard schemes in well-defined model situations — and none of them has been tested on real applications at the time of this writing. This last feature will hopefully change in the near future [20]. 

The first quantum mechanical improvement to MNDO was made by Thiel and Voityuk [19] when they introduced the formalism for adding d-orbitals to the basis set in MNDO/d. This formalism has since been used to add d-orbitals to PM3 to give PM3-tm and to PM3 and AMI to give PM3(d) and AMl(d), respectively (aU three are available commercially but have not been published at the time of writing). Voityuk and Rosch have published parameters for molybdenum for AMl(d) [20] and AMI has been extended to use d-orbitals for Si, P, S and Q. in AMI [21]. Although PM3, for instance, was parameterized with special emphasis on hypervalent compounds but with only an s,p-basis set, methods such as MNDO/d or AMI, that use d-orbitals for the elements Si-Cl are generally more reliable.

Acetyl-i-carnitine (4) is marketed in Italy for dementia as of this writing it is also in Phase III clinical trials in the United States and Europe. In a double-blind, placebo-controUed clinical trial over a one-year period involving 130 patients with clinically diagnosed AD, a slower rate of deterioration in 13 of the 14 outcome measures was observed in the dmg-treated group (28). Earfler smaller scale pilot studies in demented patients had also shown some improvement of various behavioral and cognitive functions (29). 

Aniracetam (6), launched in 1993 in both Japan and Italy for the treatment of cognition disorders, is in Phase II trials in the United States as of this writing. In clinical studies it has been shown to cause some improvement in elderly patients with mild to moderate mental deterioration (63), and in geriatric patients with cerebral insufficiency (64). In a multicenter double-blind placebo-controUed trial involving 109 patients with probable AD, positive effects were observed in 36% of patients after six months of treatment (65), a result repeated in a separate study of 115 patients (66). A review of the biological and pharmacokinetic properties, and clinical results of aniracetam treatment in cognitively impaired individuals is available (49). 

The mature Haber-Bosch technology is unlikely to change substantiaHy in the foreseeable future. The centers for commercial ammonia production may, however, relocate to sites where large quantities of natural gas are flared from cmde oil production, eg, Saudi Arabia or Venezuela. Relocation would not offset the problems for agriculture of high transportation and storage costs for ammonia production and distribution. Whereas the development of improved lower temperature and pressure catalysts is feasible, none is on the horizon as of this writing. 

Oxidized starches, usually those prepared by hypochlorite oxidation, ate used in paper coatings and adhesives (qv) to improved surface characteristics for printing or writing. Oxidized starches may also be employed as textile warp sizes and finishes, in manufacture of insulation and... 

A principal motive for developing consoHdation techniques is to reduce cost by improving yields. For aircraft parts, the so-called buy-to-fly ratio is ca 6 1. Product yields based on sponge are shown in Figure 8. The potential improvements in yield using powder are obvious. However, reHable, low cost powder-production techniques have not yet been fully developed as of this writing.
