This criticism suggests that the test should create a situation that is as near as possible to the real situation - that it should aim to represent the world outside the laboratory, be carried out on the species that are of concern, and so on. However, this is obviously not possible because of ethical and practical difficulties, not the least of which would be the very large number of tests required. Moreover, this response fails to understand how science actually works. Good scientific experiments do not attempt to replicate the complex, messy world outside the laboratory rather they are designed to provide the conditions in which particular capacities that things have to behave in certain ways are revealed. Such ideal conditions are ones in which the capacities we are interested in give rise to the behaviour that characterizes them without interference from other causes (Cartwright, 1999, p84). 

Sections A-E discuss the general concepts of atomic structure, periodicity, structure and bonding, and solution chemistry. The following Sections F-I cover different areas of the periodic table in a more descriptive way, although in Section H some concepts that are peculiar to the study of transition metals are also discussed. The final section describes some aspects of inorganic chemistry in the world outside the laboratory. 

The next problem which the, designer must face is a matcliing one. With the onset of World War II, Hammett took a leave of absence from Columbia to become first associate director and later director of the National Defense Research Committee s Explosives Research Laboratory in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh. During his tenure, the laboratory made a number of important inventions that contributed to the success of the war effort. After the war, Hammett returned to Columbia, where he remained until his retirement in 1961. He spent the last 25 years of his life in the Quaker retirement community of Medford Leas, New Jersey, where he died on February 9,1987. 

The discovery of clandestine cocaine laboratories outside the coca cultivating countries demonstrates that a small amount of cocaine is produced in other countries as well. So, today the measurement assurance approach to calibration is widely used in the United States and in many other places around the world. Increasingly, people appreciate the fact that traceability to national standards is not rigorous unless measurement uncertainty is quantified. The real world of chemical analysis is often quite different from what students do in the typical university laboratory. In the real world chemical analysis must be done quickly, accurately, economically, and often outside the laboratory setting. Analytical accuracy is crucial. A career can hinge on accuracy when a drug test is involved, and sometimes accuracy is truly a life-or-death matter, as in the screening of air travelers luggage for explosives. 

It is doubtful that a deficiency purely in magnesium and not in any other nutrient ever tKcurs outside the laboratory. Magnesium deficiency has been induced and studied in humans and animals. The results of these studies have proven useful in the diagnosis of Mg deficiency, as it occurs in the real world, and in the study of interactions between Mg and other nutrients.
