With Sulfur-Containing Compounds

The choice of materials of construction for controlled-atmosphere studies is also crucial. Most metals adsorb, desorb, and react with sulfur-containing compounds depending upon the experimental conditions. For experiments at very low h2s /Ph2 values (<1-10 ppm), adsorption, desorption, and even generation of H2S from metal- and glass-containing systems result in serious problems, particularly at reaction temperatures 196). Quartz and teflon are the preferred materials of construction for studies at low H2S concentrations 99, 100, 114, 140, 196, 197). 

Pig, sheep, beef, and whale contain about 0.2-2.4, 4.5-5.5, 1-20, and 50 mg of myoglobin in 1 g of muscle, respectively. The total content of all chromoproteins in the red muscles of fish ranges from a few to 20 mg/g and is about 20 times higher than that in the white muscles. Changes in the chromoproteins due to oxidation or reduction, denaturation, curing, and reactions with sulfur-containing compounds lead to desirable or undesirable alterations in color. 

Petroleum. Sulfur can also be recovered from crude oil with technoiogy that relies on the reaction of hydrogen with sulfur-containing compounds in crude oii (hydrodesulfurization) and permits modern refiners to turn 3 percent sulfur crudes into liquid product with no more than 0.5 percent sulfur. About 26,000 tons of saleable by-product sulfur was produced from crude oil in 1983. 

Two chapters deal with sulfur-containing compounds. The benzisothiazoles and other polycyclic isothiazoles are covered by M. Davis, in a sequel to earlier reviews in Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry, Volumes 14 and 15. 1,4-Ben-zothiazines and related compounds are dealt with by C. Brown and R. M. Davidson these compounds have not been previously comprehensively reviewed. 

Reaction of N-Haloazoles with Sulfur-Containing Compounds... 

Carbon surfaces can be modified by reactions with sulfur-containing compounds such as H2S, CS2, or SO2 at various temperatures, which results in the formation of sulfur-containing groups [122,123]. It was found that the maximum sulfur uptake takes place at 873 K and that the amount of sulfur fixed depends on the nature of the carbon [124,125]. The reactivity of various types of carbon materials toward sulfur has been investigated by Boehm and Puri [51,52]. 

Phosphoms shares 8 electrons in F, 10 in G. The octet mle favors F involvement of 3d orbitals allows G. As with sulfur-containing compounds, the lUPAC recommends G, but both formulas have been used. Many biochemically important compounds—adenosine triphosphate (ATP), for example—are phosphates and can be written with either a P=0 or P—0 unit. The same recommendation applies to them the double-bonded stmcture is preferred. 

In most cases, carbon blacks show synergism when combined with other antioxidants, mainly with sulfur-containing compounds [53,54,57,58]. The mechanism of this synergetic effect is not very well understood.
