The main grass growing season in Britain is from April to September, and it is rainfall during this period that is of most importance, although sufficient winter rainfall will ensure that soil water is plentiful at the start of the growing season. [Pg.20]

With the later maturing breeds, concentrates will have to be fed at grass in the autumn, and even then some will not fatten while grazing and will have to be brought in for winter feeding or for another store period. The shorter the growing season, because of latitude or altitude, the better the early maturing breeds perform. [Pg.46]

Further results of introducing cattle are, first, to increase the clover content of the sward, because cattle prefer grass and, second, to increase the proportion of land required for hay or silage for the winter. Cattle often have to be fed hay/silage for six months of the year, whereas sheep require winter feeding for only two months. However, the cattle will produce much more farmyard manure, which can be put back on the pastures that were cut for hay or silage. [Pg.153]

The yearling cattle were out at grass during most of the year, except for the winter months when they were fed only silage. The older cattle received silage during their second winter, with 500 g of wheat daily, and were finished before the spring. [Pg.161]

General maintenance tasks, including adjustment of flow meters and measuring equipment, cleaning ponds, mowing grass and winter service (some of which are outsourced). [Pg.191]

Insects also appreciate having somewhere to live in winter. Lady beetles, earwigs, and other insects hibernate naturally in tufts of rough grass, dead leaves, and hollow plant stems, so delay cutting down flower stems and clearing your borders until the spring. [Pg.112]

The term "herbaceous" applies, botanically, to any plant that does not form a persistent woody stem. Confusingly, though, "herbaceous" is commonly used as shorthand for "herbaceous perennial," to mean plants such as hostas, delphiniums, and the like, that die down in the winter, and return every spring. These plants may also be referred to simply as "perennials." This chapter, however, covers the whole spectrum of herbaceous plants—annuals, biennials, bulbs, and half-hardy perennials grown as annuals, as well as herbaceous perennials, and including grasses. [Pg.174]
