In the potential window examined (-2.2/-I-2.1 V versus SCE), L/+ and L2 can reversibly accept five and, respectively, six electrons, with processes localized on their bipyridinium- and bpy-type units. The catenane ligand L4" +, besides the re-... [Pg.2225]

Figure 7.26 clearly shows thatFe derivatives exhibit the highest activity, followed by Mn and Co and also illustrates a common observation in catalysis that metals with nearly half-filled d-energy levels exhibit the highest activity. So a redox type of mechanism does not operate for metals that do not exhibit the M(III)/(II) transition in the potential window examined for O2 reduction. This is the case for Ni, Cu, and Zn phthalocyanines. It is important to point out that in order to have catalytic activity, the frontier orbital of the MN4 needs to have some d character as illustrated in Fig. 7.16. The catalysts with higher activity included in Fig. 7.24 (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) have frontier orbitals with d character, whereas in Ni and Cu phthalocyanines, the frontier orbitals have more ligand character [121]. This is illustrated in Fig. 7.27 [108] that compares the frontier orbitals of CoPc and CuPc. CoPc shows a well-defined dz orbital sticking out of the plane of the phthalocyanine, whereas CuPc does not and shows low activity for O2 reduction. We now examine a specific problem, the electrooxidation of catechol at a Nafion-coated electrode containing dispersed RUO2 particles. This work was recently published by Lyons and coworkers. Typical cyclic voltammograms recorded for the Ru02/Nafion composite material in 0.2 M H2SO4 are shown in Fig. 2.33. The broad nature of the current response across the entire potential window examined... [Pg.325]

A further interesting use of the focal-conic to homeotropic texture transition is in infrared modulation [272]. Here it was found possible to modulate infrared light at A=8-12 pm with a maximum transmission of 87%, a contrast of 93%, and turn on and off times of 1 ms and 125 ms, respectively. A further window examined was 3-5 pm, and this work suggests that other chiral nematic electrooptic effects could be exploited in the near infrared. In communications technology a 2x2 optical switch for fiber-optics has been developed [273] using a chiral nematic film and two switchable nematic waveplates. It has been demonstrated that this is suitable for LED or laser sources. The device worked at 1.318 pm and had switching times of 40 ms with -26 dB crosstalk between unselected fibers. There will clearly be further advances in this use of the unique optical properites of chiral nematics. [Pg.1384]

Electrochemical measurements were carried out at room temperature ( 25 °C) by using a Metrohm E/506 Polarecord, a Metrohm E/612 VA scanner, and a Hewlett-Packard 7044 x-y recorder. Cyclic voltammograms were obtained in acetonitrile solution by using a microcell equipped with a stationary platinum disk electrode, a platinum disk counter electrode, and a SCE reference electrode with tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate as supporting electrolyte. In all cases [Ru(bpy)3](PFg)2 was used as a standard, taking its oxidation potential equal to +1260 mV vs SCE [22, 23] The electrochemical window examined was between +2.0 and -2.0 V. Scanning speed was 200 mV s. All the reported values are vs SCE. Half-wave potentials were calculated as an average of the cathodic and anodic peaks. [Pg.164]

The confluence of sharply rising Operations and Maintenance (O M) costs. NRC requested Individual Plant Examinations (IPEs) and increased personal computer capabilities gave rise to the R R Workstation. Its uses and maintains-current PSA models and databases for individual plants to perform O M planning and scheduling, and uses the PSA in IPE models to identify plant design, procedure and operational vulnerabilities. The Risk and Reliability Workstation Alliance was organized by EPRI to support the R R Workshop in order to achieve O M cost reduction, plant productivity and safety enhancement through risk-based, user-friendly, windowed software louls (Table 3.6 8). The Alliance, initiated in 1992, includes 25 U.S. utilities and four international partners from Spain, France, Korea, and Mexico. SAIC is the prime contractor for the R R Workstation, with participation of five other PSA vendors. [Pg.144]

This concludes the Windows-specific portion of the tutorial. Go on to the next subsection to continue learning Gaussian, where we examine Gaussian output in some detail. [Pg.336]

Many optical glasses are much less resistant to attack than are container and window glasses, and less severe tests are necessary. A commonly used method is to immerse specimens in either dilute nitric acid or standard acetate solution of pH 4-6 for specified periods at room temperature, then to examine the surfaces either visually or by interferometry. [Pg.876]

The most common reason for lack of rt-PA use in otherwise eligible patients remains, however, delay in presentation to the hospital. The California Acute Stroke Pilot Registry (CASPR) investigators examined the effect of various hypothetical interventions on the rate of rt-PA use. Their data suggested that if all patients with a known time of onset presented to medical attention immediately, the expected overall rate of thrombolytic treatment within 3 hours would have increased from 4.3% to 28.6%. By comparison, the expected rate of treatment that would result from instantaneous prehospital response was 5.5%, from perfect hospital care was 11.5%, and from extension of time window to 6 hours was 8.3%. [Pg.49]

The OSC materials are able to increase the efficiency by enlarging the operating window of TW catalysts [50,51], NOx reduction in TW catalysts is closely coupled to oxidation reactions since there is a competition between NOx and 02 reaction on the reducers present in the exhaust gases [52], We will first examine the effect of these OSC materials on the oxidation efficiency of TW catalysts. [Pg.243]

In the early development of analogs of the platinum compounds, complexes with windows of reactivity similar to the platinum complexes were examined extensively. Whereas direct Ni and Pd analogs of Pt complexes are too kinetically reactive to be of use as drugs, Ir and Os ammine... [Pg.825]
