Who Should Conduct the Review

Although your employees can and do perform evaluations, in some cases other professionals who are knowledgeable about the workplace and who know how to manage safety systems need to provide an independent review. This type of review will help you to calibrate your own self-assessment. Refer to Table 17-9 for an overview of a proposed team that should be involved in conducting the review. In addition, the table provides the structure for the review. 

Evaluations often cause anxiety for employees because of the uncertainty. You may be able to reduce that anxiety by discussing the evaluation with your employees. One thing to keep in mind is that the evaluation will be focusing on the management system and not on the employees. 

Reviewers can be drawn from the safety department or the safety committee. The best reviewers will be individuals or employees who possess a new or fresh vision. These individuals should not be involved in the day-to-day operations of the facility. For example, some reviewers can be corporate safety professionals, another worksite, insurance companies (many loss-control sections of an insurance carrier offer their clients the services of a certified safety professional and a certified industrial hygienist), or OSHA s consultation to help review the system or for applying for VPP
