Whiting, Pacific

White wheat (WW) is a preferred wheat for noodles, flat breads, and bakery products other than loaf bread. WW, which includes both fall- and spring-seeded varieties, is grown mainly in the Pacific Northwest. This low protein wheat, usually about 10%, comprises about 15% of U.S. wheat exports, destined primarily for East Asia and the Middle East. Subclasses include hard white, soft white, western white, and white club.

In the United States, the incidence of TB is more concentrated in non-white individuals. In 2002, non-Hispanic blacks accounted for 30% of all TB cases, followed by Hispanics at 27%.5 Asians and Pacific Islanders accounted for 22%, whereas non-Hispanic whites accounted for only 20% of the new TB cases.5 TB is most common among people 25 to 44 years of age (35% of all cases), followed by those 45 to 64 years of age (28%) and 65+ years of age (21%).

Individuals from communities of color are more likely to be uninsured than non-Hispanic whites. Over one-third of Hispanics (37%) are uninsured. They are three times more likely to be uninsured than non-Hispanic whites. Nearly one-fourth of African Americans and one-fifth of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) (Veenstra and Higashi, 2000) and American Indian/Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) are uninsured (Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, 2002).

It is against this backdrop that the history of political whiteness took shape and that the fluidity of certain groups racial identities became apparent. The crosscurrents here are terribly complex. The Mexican War, slavery and Emancipation, Reconstruction, Indian wars, anti-Chinese agitation, Pacific expansion, and popular accounts of Pacific, Asian, and African exploration all kept vividly alive the crucial distinction in American political culture dividing white from nonwhite populations, as did...
