White consumption trends

Trends in White Wine Consumption. The 1970s have brought increasing consumer interest in white table wines. In 1979, California wineries shipped 114 million gallons of white wine to markets, up from 38 million in 1974. The 1979 shipments represented 53 percent of the total table wine shipped that year (Table V). 

The post-1960 developments for various types of wine and different regions of the country are the substance of the remaining chapters. White table wines are now the most important wines produced in California s north coastal region, and consumption is increasing. The new technological procedures being used in their production are particularly emphasized. Some indication of future trends is also included. 

A case-control study in New Jersey identified an increased risk of primary liver cancer in male woikers categorized as craftsman or operators in laundry or dry cleaning operations (Stemhagen et al. 1983). The specific solvents to which the woikers were exposed and exposure levels were not identified. The study controlled for alcohol consumption and smoking. A case control study of astrocytic brain cancer among white males in Louisiana, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania showed a trend for increased brain tumors with high tetrachloroethylene exposure (Heineman et al. 1994). This result was based on only three cases and is limited in that exposure information was not available. This study may also be confounded by exposure to methylene chloride. The study authors concluded that the association between tetrachloroethylene and brain cancer requires further study.
