Occidentalol (628), a eudesmane-type sesquiterpene isolated from the wood of Eastern white cedar, was synthesized from a as-fused decalin system (627) prepared by cycloaddition of the a-pyrone (625) with 4-methyl-3-cyclohexenone (626 Scheme 140) (72TL4651). Derivatives of 2-pyrone have also been employed in syntheses of colchicine (629 Scheme 141) (59AG637) and barrelene (630 Scheme 142) (69JA2330).

C. Heat Treatments. Several woods have been heated under wet and dry heating conditions to determine the effect heat has on the decay resistance of these woods. Alaska-cedar, Atlantic white-cedar, bald cypress, Douglas-fir, mahogany, redwood, white oak, Sitka spruce, and western redcedar were heated under dry conditions or wet conditions at temperatures of 80-180°C for varying lengths of time. Boyce (11) found that dry heat at 100°C or steam heat at 120°C for 20 minutes had no effect on the decay resistance. Similar results were observed by Scheffer and Eslyn (12) in soil-block tests with Lenzites trabea for the heated softwoods and Polyporus versicolor for the heated hardwoods. 

Bark from eastern white cedar and western redcedar was used as the entire furnish, or with a mixture of 10% pulp screenings. These species were chosen because of the natural fibrous nature of their barks. Although tests showed the experimental hardboards could not meet standards then in force, eastern white cedar bark showed some promise. For softboards, the eastern white cedar produced acceptable boards. 

The treatment group did have significantly lower scores for rhinorrhea, nasal congestion and sore throats, suggesting that treatment with Echinacea could alleviate some symptoms of the common cold. Wiistenberg et al. (1999) reported similar results using the preparation Esberitox , a product made with Echinacea root, wild indigo root and white cedar leaves.

White cedar was reacted with 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (78) with and without a pyridine catalyst to a maximum nitrogen content of 3.5 and 1.2%, respectively. This corresponds to weight gains of 21.8 and 7.5%. This high weight gain was accompanied by an ASE of 50%.

Soils. The peat is usually woody, dark brown, moderately well decomposed, and strongly acid. It contains buried logs and stumps, and has been built up on level sandy plains from a succession of two or three different forests dominated by cypress or white cedar and by mixtures with gum and red maple.
