Where Do I Start

Chances are, you don t have an unlimited amount of time to prepare for the GRE General Test. You have a life outside your plans for graduate school that may include work and family obligations. Or you may already be in school. How can you maximize the study time you do have To study means to give one s attention to learning a subject to look at with careful attention. Notice that the word attention comes up twice in this definition. How you study is as important as how much time you spend studying. [Pg.13]

To study effectively, you need to focus all your attention on the material, so the preparation time you have must be quality time. This section of the book will help you determine which study strategies are right for you. It also will provide you with techniques for overcoming the two most common roadblocks to successful studying anxiety and distraction. [Pg.13]

Actor and comedian Jim Carrey reportedly wrote himself a check for a million dollars when he was still struggling and broke. He carried that check in his wallet for years. Whenever he felt discouraged, he would take out the check and look at it. He visualized receiving a million-dollar check for his work. Jim Carrey made that million-dollar paycheck part of his reality, and reality added a few zeros for him. [Pg.14]

You have likely researched the graduate programs in which you are interested. Perhaps you are attracted to the work of certain faculty members and have decided you want to study with them. Maybe you know the reputations of a particular program and want the career opportunities it can offer. You may desire to go to a school close to where you live. If you have not investigated your options, now is the time to do that. You can search online for information, contact schools directly, and ask reference librarians to help you search. [Pg.14]

As you narrow your options to one or a few schools, you will want to learn as much about these particular program(s) as you possibly can. Perform Internet searches for all faculty members in a program to learn more about their particular areas of interest. This can help you make your decision. If you have already decided on a school, having knowledge of faculty interests and publications will give you an edge when you submit application materials and go for interviews. [Pg.14]

One of the primary questions that have plagued method development chro-matographers is, Where do I start This question applies equally to any school of thought, whether the chromatographer uses no optimization tools, uses computer-assisted optimization, or even uses on-line optimization. In any of these cases, the chromatographer must choose a proper starting point. [Pg.519]

With this type of problem, there is no simple answer to the question of where do I start You should always start with the information that you can readily interpret, then work through the rest, but this will not give the same order of events for everyone. When you have a structure, it is good practice to go back over all the data, to make sure that everything fits and that you have not become enamored of one answer early on and bent other data to fit. [Pg.199]

The perennial student question Where do we start The instructor will be sympathetic but not rigidly prescriptive. There are, however, guidelines that do start with the prescriptive statement Go for the molecular formula. Why Simply because it is the single most useful bit of information available to the chemist and is worth the effort sometimes necessary. It provides an overall impression of the molecule (i.e., the number and kinds of atoms), and it provides the index of hydrogen deficiency—in other words, the sum of the number of rings and of double and triple bonds (Section 1.5.3). [Pg.341]

So where do we start Mr. David Fram, Director of ADA and EEO Services from the National Employment Law Institute in his 2010 presentation, utilizes the very simple question How can I help you This initial response can open the doors to communications between the safety professional and employee as well as starting down the right path to ensure compliance with the ADA. Unlike other areas of the safety functions where action is the order of the day, safety professionals confronting ADA issues must stop and listen to the individual and assess the facts and the ADA requirements and decisions in order to make an informed decision. Shooting from the hip or failing to listen to the employee or applicant can create potential liabilities for the safety professional and his or her company or organization. Remember. .. So, where do you start looking for new products Corporate objectives, mentioned earlier, provide focus for starting. Ideas for new products generate from many sources I.e., consumers, employees, technology and market analysis. Her gentle mannerism, her voice. When I started seeing her she would call me at home to see how I was doing. And whenever I called her—no matter where she was—I got a phone call back within ten minutes, I thought she really cared about me and wanted to see me get better. And she made me feel that taking the medications [she prescribed] was the right thing to do. [Pg.57]

If ever tiiere were an extremely emotional and volatile subject, money is it. Quite basic journalistic questions who, why, what, when, and where, really. I think that the most usefial thing I can do is to ask people simple basic questions about what they re doing. "Why would you want to make a film about this subject Whafs the point of the narrative Why did you choose this situation and the subject How does the situation and the subject you chose translate itself into this narrative " If you chose to examine the film from this point of view, you have to tell me why. A lot of filmmakers, including Leslie, are very savvy at figuring this out. I mean, Jehane Noujaim—both Startup.com and Control Room are very well thought out. She tells me that she has no idea what she ll end up with when she starts filming, but this is hard to believe. When you get a pitch from her, it usually lasts about five minutes, but she knows exactly what she wants to do. The characters seem created in a very solid way, very early in the process. [Pg.281]
